Seul, il commence à dessiner. Quelques mois après l'ouverture du Centre d'Art de Port-au-Prince en 1944, Rigaud Benoit et un groupe d'artistes se rendent à Jacmel à la recherche de nouveaux talents. Le jeune Duffaut se présente à eux avec la certitude que son destin va changer. Durant la nuit il fait un songe. La vierge lui apparaît main tendue, perchée au sommet d'une montagne en forme de pain de sucre. Elle lui donne l'ordre de peindre sa ville. Soucieux de s'acquitter au plus vite de cette dette céleste, le jeune Duffaut s'acharne à reproduire Jacmel dans ses moindres détails. A l'instar du Douanier Rousseau qui, pour ses portraits, prenait les mensurations exactes de ses modèles et les rapportait sur la toile à l'aide d'un compas et d'une règle graduée; Duffaut s'efforce de reconstituer à la perfection les rues sinueuses et verticales, les maisons délicates et colorées du début du siècle : les Gingerbread. Pour ne rien laisser au hasard, il inscrit sur son tableau le nom des édifices : École, douane police, hôpital. L'effet obtenu est saisissant.
