Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Own a piece of lesbian literary history! This is the first edition, published by Daughters, Inc., a tiny Vermont press cofounded by the author. (Later reprinted by The Feminist Press.) Of additional historical interest, this copy was part of the Daughters of Bilitis Library in Boston. It… has a handwritten LF label taped to the spine, the letters D.O.B written on the top edge, and Daughters of Bilitis Library handwritten, with a stamped address, on the half title page. This copy is no more than Good, as there is significant creasing to the front cover, as well as staining/toning around edges of text block. Pages internally are lightly toned, but show no writing, no notes, no highlighting, and no underlining. Binding is holding, although glue is a bit dry.

(Off Our Backs) - quote taken from the back cover. ***'June Arnold (October 27, 1926 - March 11, 1982) was an American novelist and publisher, known for her novel "Sister Gin" and the posthumous novel "Baby Houston". Arnold's writing, such as "Sister Gin", and the books she published through her press, Daughters, Incorporated, focused on telling the stories of lesbian lives and relationships. Arnold's first novel, "Applesauce", was published in 1966 by McGraw Hill. It explored how women's personalities change after motherhood and marriage. In 1971, June Arnold founded Daughters, Incorporated with her partner Parke Bowman. Daughters, Inc. published several books, many focusing on gender and lesbian experiences, including Lois Gould's "X: A Fabulous Child's Story", Rita Mae Brown's "Rubyfruit Jungle", and Arnold's novels. Arnold's second novel, "The Cook and the Carpenter", was published in 1973. It was followed by "Sister Gin" in 1975, a novel about Su, a 46-year-old woman whose carefully constructed life seemingly falls apart at the onset of menopause. Su struggles to write a play, keep her life together, leave her partner of 20 years, Bettina, all while drinking copious amounts of "Sister Gin." In addition to founding Daughters, Inc. and publishing three novels during her life, Arnold helped organize the first Women in Print Conference. She also contributed to publications such as Sinister Wisdom, Village Voice and Sister Courage.' (Wiki) ***A first printing of the Women's Press first UK edition, in lovely condition - published as a paperback original. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Paperback. Condition: New. Women's liberation sought to transform every sector of U.S. society--its educational system, culture, language, politics, and, importantly, the delivery of social services. To enable this movement, women all over the country began to establish women's centers. In New York City, women from almost every…local women's liberation group took over an abandoned building in lower Manhattan on New Year's Eve, 1970. They named the building The Fifth Street Women's Building and renovated it to feed, clothe, shelter, and educate women in need. The take-over was a huge success, attracting hundreds of activists and community members. Thirteen days later, the New York City Tactical Police stormed the building, expelled the women, and ended the action. The City then tore the building down and built a parking lot on the site. June Arnold was one of the original planners and an active participant in this episode. When she got out of jail, she went home and wrote this novel about what happened. The Cook and the Carpenter, which quickly gained fame for its use of a non- gendered language, remains one of the best representations of the time period that berthed modern feminism and paved the way for lesbian communities.
