Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Reprint. A detailed compilation of the mystical visions of the German Augustinian nun and stigmatist Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774?1824).Emmerich, bedridden for much of her later life and bearing the stigmata, reported extensive visions of biblical events. The German poet Clemens Brentano recorded her accounts in detailed notes from 1818 until her death in 1824. Schmöger later arranged and edited the material. The work is presented as private revelations rather than public revelation or an addition to the biblical canon. It is valued by many readers for devotional purposes and for the vividness with which it elaborates biblical narratives, while remaining subject to the Church?s ordinary criteria for private revelations. Emmerich was beatified in 2004 on the basis of her personal holiness; the beatification process focused on her life and piety rather than the authenticity of the specific content recorded by Brentano. The multi-volume work provides an expansive narrative of the life of Jesus Christ, the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, related Old Testament mysteries, and the early establishment of the Church. For portions of Jesus? public ministry it offers nearly day-by-day descriptions. It includes extensive supplementary material not found in the canonical Gospels.ABOUT THIS SET: Four volumes complete.
