RARE IMPRESSION LYONNAISE PAR SÉBASTIEN GRYPHE DE L'ANABASE D'ALEXANDRE EN RELIURE ARMORIÉE DE L'ÉPOQUE In-16° (121 x 73 mm), 421 pp. (mal chiffrées 419), basane havane, encadrement d'une double filet sur les plats avec fers aux feuillages en écoinçons et armes au centre, dos lisse orné, tranches dorées (reliure de l'époque ou l…égèrement postérieure vers 1580). Rare impression lyonnaise par Sébastien Gryphe de l'Anabase d'Alexandre, longtemps considérée comme l'étude la plus rigoureuse des conquêtes d'Alexandre le Grand. Né à Nicomédie vers 95, Arrien, de nationalité romaine mais de culture grecque, exerce comme prêtre de Déméter et de Koré et étudie auprès du philosophe stoïque Épictète, dont il consigne les enseignements dans les Entretiens et le Manuel. Il se lie d'amitié avec le futur empereur Hadrien, ouvert à l'hellénisme, qui lui confiera des fonctions aussi bien administratives que militaires, révélant Arrien comme un brillant tacticien. Admirateur de Xénophon, dont il emprunte le nom, Arrien s'illustre également dans le domaine de l'Histoire. Son Anabase d'Alexandre, fondée en grande partie sur les écrits de Ptolémée et d'Aristobule, sera longtemps considérée comme le récit le plus digne de foi des expéditions militaires d'Alexandre le Grand. Grand éditeur de la Renaissance reconnu pour la qualité de ses productions (ouvrages de droit, classiques latins et grecs de petit format imprimés en italiques), Sébastien Gryphe (1492-1556) s'attacha également à diffuser les écrits des humanistes. Il édita notamment la majorité des oeuvres de François Rabelais et d'André Alciat. PROVENANCE : Famille d'Escoubleau de Sourdis avec armes sur les plats, « Parti d'azur & de gueules, à la bande d'or brochante sur le tout ». Il pourrait s'agir de Jacques d'Escoubleau de Sourdis (15??-1562), abbé des abbayes de Mauléon, Preuilly (1536), abbé commendataire d'Airvault (1551), nommé évêque de Maillezais en 1543, grand-oncle du cardinal François d'Escoubleau de Sourdis, ou de son neveu Henri d'Escoubleau de Sourdis (1548-1615), évêque de Maillezais à sa suite. Baudrier, VIII, 258. Épidermures, manque à la coiffe inférieure et aux coupes et coins, garde blanche absente, petite mouillure angulaire marginale en toute fin de volume.
