Du graphisme à la scénographie, en passant par la direction d'acteurs, l'art du costume et des décors, ce "laboratoire de Théâtre" s'attache à métisser différents courants artistiques comme l'expressionisme, le Bauhaus, le futurisme ou le simultanéisme. S'inspirant des théories de Meyerhold, Taïrov ou encore Artaud, "Art & Action" concentre son activité autour du théâtre-atelier-appartement du 66 de la rue Lepic, entièrement financé par le ménage Autant-Lara, sans souci de reconnaissance du public ni des institutions. Et cependant, entre 1912 et 1952, pas moins de 400 représentations seront données, parfois dans des lieux insolites, et 112 oeuvres jouées, la plupart réputées "inadaptables".
