American Nature Association, headquartered in Washington, D.C., was the publisher of Nature Magazine from 1923 to 1959; and a discount reseller of natural science books for its members. It was founded by Arthur Newton Pack and his father, Charles. Nature Magazine was an "illustrated monthly with popular articles about nature" and later, the "interpreter of the great outdoors." A May 1924 review of the organization and its magazine, written by Carroll Lane Fenton and published in American Midland Naturalist called the magazine "excellent" with "abundant pictures, admirably printed"; and said it was a "highly worth while publication" that deserves a wide circulation among town and school libraries." Bruce Horsfall is best known for his book illustrations of birds and mammals. In 1903-06, he focused on painting birds, and from then on, he devoted his life to the design of plates for books and magazines. Mr. Horsfall illustrated thirty nature books, and was the author of "Birds and Animal Paintings", and did many articles and illustrations for many publications. Other books that he illustrated included Frank M. Chapman's "Warblers of North America", William B. Scott's "A History of Land Mammals in the Western Hemisphere", and Alice E. Ball's "A Year with the Birds". Horsfall was also the director of Arts for Nature Magazine, and a researcher and artist for the Smithsonian Institute.
