Publisher: London, George G. Harrap & Company Ltd., 1929. Signed limitation page present: this copy is numbered #458 within the English issue of 575 copies and bears the signature of Arthur Rackham. Language: Text in English. Size: 10.5 x 8 inches. Pages: 231 pages. Binding: Very good publisher's original full vellum binding, decoratively gilt-stamped to front cover and spine, with delicate ornamental border and floral motif. Top edge gilt (hinges fine, overall slightly worn and scuffed - as shown, covers slightly bowed as often, with light natural handling and gentle toning to the vellum, presenting a soft, warm patina - as shown) under a protective removable mylar cover. A handsome and desirable example of this classic Rackham production. Content: Very good content (bright, tight and clean, foxing mainly confined to preliminary and final leaves - as shown). Text block otherwise fresh, with wide margins. Illustrations: Profusely illustrated by Arthur Rackham, including a colour frontispiece and eleven mounted colour plates, along with numerous line drawings. The illustrations are rich in detail and atmosphere, capturing the gentle humour and humanity of Goldsmith's narrative with Rackham's unmistakable style. All plates present. **** The book: First published in 1766, The Vicar of Wakefield tells the story of Dr. Primrose and his family, whose quiet rural life is disrupted by a series of misfortunes, loss of wealth, deception, and imprisonment, yet sustained by resilience, faith, and enduring affection. This 1929 Harrap edition, issued in a signed limited printing, pairs Goldsmith's timeless narrative with Arthur Rackham's evocative illustrations. Bound in vellum and produced with notable care, it stands as one of the most refined illustrated editions of the work, sought after for both its artistic quality and its place within the golden age of book illustration. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). Limited Edition. A very good copy of the signed limited edition of Midsummer Night's Dream illustrated by Arthur Rackham. In the original gilt-decorated full vellum binding with 40 tipped-in colour plates, decorative title and numerous black and white illustrations and designs. It is signed by Arthur Rackham on the limitation page and is copy no 655/1000. It was published in November 1908 at a time when Arthur Rackham had become well known as an illustrator and it received wide acclaim. The limited edition had sold out by March 1909. The binding has gilt titles and a gilt scene on the front board and gilt titles to the spine. It is sound and bright and free of the usual warping, although the ties are missing. There is some light marking close to the spine and round the edges on the front board and a couple of small spots on the spine. The back board has a dark mark towards the spine joint and some scuff marks and small spots. Top page edges are gilted; remainder untrimmed. The endpapers and the plate mounts are a brown stock paper which is mottled to varying degrees. The contents are complete and clean and the quality of the printing is superb. The plates have captionned tissue guards. The guards and text pages adjoining the brown stock paper mounts tend to be brown toned or with light spotting. Rackham chose which sections of text to illustrate so the plates are unevenly distributed and some are in close sequence. These tend to have a slight ripple. There is a small repaired side edge tear on p95/6. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images. Signed by Illustrator(s).
