Add to basketAuthor: Oliver Goldsmith. Illustrated and signed by Arthur Rackham. Title: The Vicar of Wakefield. Publisher: London, George G. Harrap & Company Ltd., 1929. Signed limitation page present: this copy is numbered #458 within the English issue of 575 copies and bears the signature of Arthur Rackham. Language: Text in English. Size:… 10.5 x 8 inches. Pages: 231 pages. Binding: Very good publisher's original full vellum binding, decoratively gilt-stamped to front cover and spine, with delicate ornamental border and floral motif. Top edge gilt (hinges fine, overall slightly worn and scuffed - as shown, covers slightly bowed as often, with light natural handling and gentle toning to the vellum, presenting a soft, warm patina - as shown) under a protective removable mylar cover. A handsome and desirable example of this classic Rackham production. Content: Very good content (bright, tight and clean, foxing mainly confined to preliminary and final leaves - as shown). Text block otherwise fresh, with wide margins. Illustrations: Profusely illustrated by Arthur Rackham, including a colour frontispiece and eleven mounted colour plates, along with numerous line drawings. The illustrations are rich in detail and atmosphere, capturing the gentle humour and humanity of Goldsmith's narrative with Rackham's unmistakable style. All plates present. **** The book: First published in 1766, The Vicar of Wakefield tells the story of Dr. Primrose and his family, whose quiet rural life is disrupted by a series of misfortunes, loss of wealth, deception, and imprisonment, yet sustained by resilience, faith, and enduring affection. This 1929 Harrap edition, issued in a signed limited printing, pairs Goldsmith's timeless narrative with Arthur Rackham's evocative illustrations. Bound in vellum and produced with notable care, it stands as one of the most refined illustrated editions of the work, sought after for both its artistic quality and its place within the golden age of book illustration. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Limited Edition. A very good copy of the signed limited edition of Midsummer Night's Dream illustrated by Arthur Rackham. In the original gilt-decorated full vellum binding with 40 tipped-in colour plates, decorative title and numerous black and white illustrations and designs. It is signed by Ar…thur Rackham on the limitation page and is copy no 655/1000. It was published in November 1908 at a time when Arthur Rackham had become well known as an illustrator and it received wide acclaim. The limited edition had sold out by March 1909. The binding has gilt titles and a gilt scene on the front board and gilt titles to the spine. It is sound and bright and free of the usual warping, although the ties are missing. There is some light marking close to the spine and round the edges on the front board and a couple of small spots on the spine. The back board has a dark mark towards the spine joint and some scuff marks and small spots. Top page edges are gilted; remainder untrimmed. The endpapers and the plate mounts are a brown stock paper which is mottled to varying degrees. The contents are complete and clean and the quality of the printing is superb. The plates have captionned tissue guards. The guards and text pages adjoining the brown stock paper mounts tend to be brown toned or with light spotting. Rackham chose which sections of text to illustrate so the plates are unevenly distributed and some are in close sequence. These tend to have a slight ripple. There is a small repaired side edge tear on p95/6. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). Signed by Illustrator(s).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Carroll, Lewis. (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., [n. d. but 1907]. First American De Luxe Edition illustrated by Arthur Rackham. With a "proem" by Austin Dobson. Limited to 550 numbered copies…SIGNED by the publisher of which this is #114. Large quarto. Thirteen full-page tipped-in colored plates with all tissue guards present, illustrations sized much larger than those found in the first trade edition. This large paper edition is 162pp and measures 11 1/2" x 9 ¼." Original publisher's quarter dark green cloth over light green boards lettered in gilt with a small onlay image of Alice affixed to the upper board, t.e.g. A VERY FINE copy in ORIGINAL GLASSINE DUST JACKET still residing inside its matching green ORIGINAL CARDBOARD GIFT BOX. Virtually as new and untouched, an astonishing survival. In 1907, after more than forty years, Lewis Carroll's classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland entered the public domain. That year, many new editions of Alice's Adventures were free to be published. Of those, Arthur Rackham's 1907 illustrated version is arguably the most iconic (and the most sought after) visual interpretation of Alice outside of the original Victorian era drawings by John Tenniel. In thirty years of selling Lewis Carroll desiderata, this is the first time we've ever seen the Doubleday Edition De Luxe in its original glassine DJ (much less with its original gift box). Also included, an example of the first American Trade Edition (c.1907, printed in England) as a reading copy. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).

Quarto (4t0.) 10 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches (266 x 198 mm), 255 pages. Rebound in modern full vellum, preserving the original gilt-stamped portions of the original binding from the front board and sp…ine, which are then inlaid in place (see photos). Original brown pictorial endpapers preserved. Twelve color plates (including frontispiece) by Arthur Rackham protected with letterpress captioned tissue guards. Introduction by R. Farquharson, the translator, who chose to employ unrhymed verse to keep as close to the original meaning of the play. Signed by Rackham in the colophon. Housed in a custom-built clamshell case with leather ties (2 of 4 ties missing). Book protected with a clear archival Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper.______CONDITION: Vellum binding is clean (rebound). Covers are slightly bowed (concave) with the front cover edge moving approximately 1/2 inch away from the text block (see photo) due to shrinking of the original vellum with age. As a result, the clamshell box does not close completely. The interior text pages, illustrations and captioned tissue guards are in fine condition without foxing or toning. No marking, ex-libris, etc._____DISCUSSION: This is a classic from the Golden Age of Illustration and one of Arthur Rackham's final works before dying of cancer in 1939. Rackham had a gift for portraying fantastical creatures, making this one of his most successful illustrated books._____NOTE: International shipping cost using USPS International Priority EXPRESS Mail shipping with tracking to most locations in the United Kingdom and Europe is $55 U.S. dollars. Add to basketThis deluxe edition of Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb is a notable adaptation of Shakespearean drama for younger audiences. The stories maintain much of Shakespeare's original language while simplifying narrative arcs from classics such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet, and The Tempest. Produced at the heigh…t of the "Golden Age" of British book illustration, this edition features thirteen color plates by the renowned artist Arthur Rackham, one of which ("Puck") was not included in the trade edition of this same work. Published by Dent in London and Dutton in New York, this Large Paper version is numbered 542 of 750 and signed by Rackham himself. Quarto (4to), single volume. Good condition; cream cloth binding is moderately soiled from handling with only one red ribbon tie still attached, hinges that are fragile but still intact, illustrated endpapers somewhat discolored, but pages are clean and free of foxing, browning confined to the very edges of some pages, and all illustrations present and well-preserved. Collation: xii, 304 pp. Illustrations: 13 full-page color engravings by Arthur Rackham including frontispiece and exclusive "Puck" plate. Edition: Limited Deluxe Edition, 542 of 750, signed by Rackham, 1909. #31145. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Arthur Rackham (illustrator).
