"It has been left to a contemporary, Arthur Szyk, to rediscover the secret and to revive the art - not in terms of Jewish books alone, for his reputation is co-extensive with the book-loving world. To call him the greatest illuminator since the sixteenth-century is no flattery. It is the simple truth which becomes manifest to any person who studies his work with the care it deserves. Alone perhaps among modern artists (for he is an artist above all) Szyk considers his art in the terms of books, and books in the terms of his art. He does not illuminate a page, as many before him have attempted to do, considering it to be a unit in itself. He thinks of each page in its relation to the text and to the volume, integrating calligraphy, illumination, illustration and narrative into one harmonious whole. It is in this, even more than in the exquisite perfection of his work, that he inherits the spirit of his medieval precursors.Szyk sees the Haggadah as a unity. He worked upon it between 1932 and 1938, when the greatest perhaps of all the tragedies in its millennial history overwhelmed the Jewish people. It was natural therefore for him to be absorbed in that wonderful passage, the keynote of the whole ritual: It is this Devine pledge that hath stood by our fathers and by us also. Not only one man hath risen against us to destroy us, but in every generation have men risen against us to destroy us. But the Holy One (Blessed be He!) delivereth us always from their hand." Profusely illustrated with reproductions of exquisite illuminations and drawings by Szyk in brilliant rich colors. Text in English and Hebrew. Clamshell box with very light rubbing and scuffing, small light water stain on cover, overall in good, binding with minor chips, interior in near fine condition.

Hardcover. Condition: vg+ to near fine. First Hebrew-language edition. 1/500. Quarto. 64pp [2]. Rebound in red buckram with gilt lettering on the spine. Elaborate gilt-stamped illustrated title page and frontispiece. Decorative initials. One of a limited edition of 500 copies printed "for the United States", hand-numbered on the colophon at the back of the book, of which this is No. 314. Artist and political activist Arthur Szyk interpreted the character in the biblical "Book of Esther," his first illustrated book, as one who was a witness to history and fighter for justice. The story recounts the efforts of Esther and her uncle Mordechai to save the Jews of ancient Persia from annihilation. During times of crisis, Jews have drawn strength from this text, which dramatizes the persecution of the Jews, extols their heroic resistance, and proclaims their eventual triumph over their enemies. This work also known in French as "Le Livre d'Esther", was first published in 1925 in Paris, during Szyk's second stay there (1921-1937), in both a bilingual French-Hebrew edition and this Hebrew only edition. Magnificently illustrated with 20 tissue-guarded illuminations (19 full-page plates, 1 chapter heading), Szyk's illustrations display his talent for decorative detail as well as his fascination with the "orientalist" trend in Jewish art. Szyk incorporated motifs drawn from archaeological discoveries in the Near East, such as winged bulls of Assyria and cuneiform writing. Printed on heavy card-stock paper. Text in Hebrew only. Binding with very minor rubbing. Illustrated book plate of Daniel M. Friedenberg, pasted on the interior front cover. Pages clean and vibrant throughout. Book block tight. Binding in very good+, inteiror in near fine condition overall. Hebrew title: ????? ???? Alternate transliteration: Megilat Ester.

Softcover. Condition: vg. First edition. Oblong 12mo. 7 1/4 x 10 1/2". Unpaginated. 32 pages. Original string-tied illustrated brown paper wrappers, with text and image in red. Illustrated title page. The copy is a scarce larger variant, with right and bottom margins of the book block un-trimmed. It was however mis-bound, following the 10th leaf, missing two of the double-sided leaves (with 3 images total), and instead substituting additional copies of two different leaves already present instead, bound out of order. The missing content has been added in the form of modern facsimiles. This scarce satirical anti-German work takes the form of a illustrated poem, with images by acclaimed Polish-Jewish illustrator Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) and text by Polish-Jewish lyricist and poet Julian Tuwim (1894-1953). It was the first completely illustrated by Szyk to be published, and contains 19 larger illustrations, as well as 5 smaller images (including historiated initials) by the artist, all printed lithographically in black. Here Szyk and Tuwim humorously take aim at the stereotypical German character, mocking a type of overbearing bureaucratic ways, the organization of their military, German ambitions and self-importance, and a humorous analysis of the recent Revolution (1918-1919). The Germans are shown conducting the revolution in a typically ridiculous, laborious and fussy manner, e.g. showing soldiers, under the supervision of a police man, in front of a dynamite factory reading pamphlets on how to start a revolt in the army and navy while a crowd is lining up at a side entrance of a "explosives distribution center." The images here display an earlier form of Szyk's characteristic style, which appears closer to classical caricature than his latter images. Text throughout in Polish. Wrappers with a small light stain to the front cover. Light rubbing to extremities. Interior including all images and text clean. In very good condition overall, save for the missing content. Protected in modern mylar.

SZYK, Arthur., illus. (illustrator). (DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE). SZYK, Arthur., illus. In Congress July 4, 1776. [beginning of text]. Collotype print poster. New Canaan, CT: n.p., 1950. Approximately 37 x 29 inches. Unframed and housed in a protective mylar sleeve. A few minor closed tears to margins, overall very good. One of the final works produced by Arthur Szyk (1894-1951), which he unveiled in New Canaan, Connecticut, on Independence Day 1950. Szyk, a Jewish refugee from Poland, was an artist and illustrator who specialized in medieval-inspired decoration, and is most often remembered for his elaborate Haggadah, containing motifs comparing the Egyptians in the Exodus story to Nazis, first published in London in 1940. In 1948 Syzk became a U.S. citizen and wanted to showcase his patriotism through his work by producing and illustrating the Declaration of Independence. When the original art was first shown in New Canaan, he expressed his wish for the piece to be given to the Library of Congress, where it is currently on display. This illuminated work contains seals of each of the states (then numbering only 48) and territories along with Revolutionary War scenes and portraits of the Founding Fathers, particularly of George Washington, who peers out from the left margin. The size of this work is unusual for Szyk, as he usually gravitated towards much smaller formats intended for books and magazines, rather than display posters. Quite rare in the trade with only one comparable copy at auction this century selling for $2400 in 2013.
