'No other archaeological endeavor in Israel has attracted such widespread attention as the excavations at Masada carried out under the direction of Yigael Yadin in 19631965. Interest may have been precipitated by Josephus Flavius' detailed account of the dramatic fate of Masada at the end of the Jewish War against the Romans (6673/74 CE). Masada includes remains of an impressive architectural complex built by Herod the Great and vivid evidence of Jewish resistance to Rome's might.'.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Private 4to-sized notebook, with a cloth spine and faux-marbled covers, entitled "Indian Things" on a cover label, containing a handwritten inventory of a private collection of Native American (American Indian) artifacts. The collection was accumulated by Dr. Albert H. Ebeling. Dr. Ebeling was a medical researcher on the staff of Rockefeller University and there worked with Alexis Carrel. Writing is confined to five pages of the notebook. Laid in are twenty-one or so half-sheet invoices from the Indian Crafts Shop, and one full sheet invoice from Navajo Tours, both located in Gallup, New Mexico. Date when filled in is 1924. The former shop dealt in, according to their letterhead, Navajo rugs, Indian silverware, turquoise, baskets, plaques, pottery and photographs. Detailed on the invoices are hundreds of artifacts which were sent on approval to Dr. Ebeling. Attached to the invoices are a number of pages of handwritten notes, calculating totals spent, items returned, etc. Also present is a separate handwritten inventory on standard inventory forms, another inventory handwritten on yellow paper, and a typed list. Inventory numbers run up into the 200s but not all numbers are present. A fascinating and unique record of the early days of the trade in Native American, especially Southwestern, artifacts. Overall in very good condition, invoices with fold lines, probably as sent, and sometimes somewhat brittle along the folds.
