Hardcover. Condition: Fine. London, quarto, xiii, [3], 24 p. and 25 fine stipple-engraved plates of fossils. This copy has an additional bis plate III that is not found in the 1825 first issue or in some copies of this printing. ***CONTENT: Edmund Tyrell Artis (1789-1847) was a pioneering English paleobotanist, as well as an accomplished artist and sculptor - this is his most celebrated work. Many of his plant fossils were personally collected in the underground coal mines of Yorkshire and elsewhere; his cabinet, said to exceed 1000 fossils, had many specimens of exceptional quality. This volume includes some of the best paleobotanical illustrations to have been published up to that time, most drawn by the leading natural history illustrator John Curtis. Gideon Mantell, citing this edition, declared: "the plates are well executed and faithfully portray the original specimens", and he reprinted some plates in his 1850 "Pictorial Atlas of Fossil Remains". Each plate is accompanied by descriptive text, with historical and systematic data and locality information. Apart from the additional plate and a unique title page, this volume is an identical reissue of the original 1825 printing. The plates herein are dated "1824". ***CONDITION: This is a Fine copy expertly rebound in recent half linen and marbled boards, with gilt-lettered spine labels. The covers are pristine. New endpapers. A few pages have light tanning/offsetting, but most of the text is like new; the plates, printed on thick paper, are particularly fresh and bright. Joints and hinges solid, binding firm. No indications of previous ownership. A very handsome copy of the earliest English treatise solely devoted to paleobotany. Very scarce. BMNH 64. Ward and Carozzi 79. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
