The dust jacket has some wear, edge tears and soiling. This is a study of the beginnings of biblical archaeology examines its historical background and the cultural conditions which influenced its development. Neil Asher Silberman (born June 19, 1950) is an American archaeologist, historian, and heritage scholar who specializes in biblical archaeology and the political impact of historical myths. He is the author of several books, including The Hidden Scrolls, The Message and the Kingdom: How Jesus and Paul Ignited a Revolution and Transformed the Ancient World , The Bible Unearthed: Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin of Its Sacred Texts, and Digging for God and Country. He studied Near Eastern archaeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is a contributing editor to Archaeology and a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Cultural Property. He served as the president of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Interpretation and Presentation (ICIP) and was a member of the ICOMOS International Advisory Committee and Scientific Council from 2005-2015. Since 1998 Silberman has been involved in the field of public heritage interpretation and presentation, working on projects in Europe and the Middle East. From 2004 to 2007 he served as director of the Ename Center for Public Archaeology and Heritage Presentation in Belgium. In 2008 he was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Anthropology of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Digging for God and Country by Neil Asher Silberman is an acclaimed 1982 historical study. It examines the beginnings of biblical archaeology in the Middle East, exploring how imperial rivalries, religious fervor, and covert espionage transformed the region's ancient ruins into a battleground for global dominance. The book chronicles the intersection of 19th-century archaeology and colonial power by detailing several key themes: The Imperial Scramble: From Napoleon's 1799 expedition to the 1917 British conquest of Ottoman Palestine, Silberman shows how European nations (including France, Britain, Germany, and Russia) used scientific exploration as a diplomatic proxy to expand their influence. Intelligence Gathering: Ostensibly academic surveys and mapping missions-most notably those by the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF)-often doubled as covert intelligence gathering to support future military operations and imperial claims. Artifacts and Rivalries: The book details intense covert plotting between foreign consuls and rival scholars vying for excavation permits, antiquities, and the prestige of proving biblical history.
