The charges emerged in the wake of the Popish Plot hysteria, when suspicion of Catholic activity ran high and even tenuous associations could prove fatal. Thwing was alleged to have maintained correspondence with Jesuits and to have plotted rebellion, while Pressicks was implicated through her support and association. Despite the lack of substantive evidence, Thwing was convicted and executed; Pressicks, though condemned, was later reprieved.
