The exterior features seasonal greetings superimposed on a wraparound colour map of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, with labels for Kuwait, Ra's al Mishab, Manifa, Ras Tanura, Dhahran, Arabi, and Bahrain. The interior features a b/w photo aerial view of the 3 ships to the left panel, with their names printed to the right, below which is a ms message dated Ras al Mishab, Dec 5, 1951. The USS Maury made three cruises to the Gulf in 1949, 1950 and 1951, accompanied by the tugs USS Allegheny and USS Stallion, where they conducted hydrographic surveys, gathered environmental intelligence, and made charts to support combat operations. They also advised Aramco, flying over Thomas Barger and other senior officials who "wanted to confer about the Ras Tanura channel survey" in relation to its refinery, whose capacity had tripled during 1945-52. (References: Military History Fandom - USS Maury; USS Maury Cruise Book Shuuf, 1952: 41-58). This commemorative card therefore dates to the end of its duties in the Gulf. Ras al Mishab was an important port on the Saudi coast, which had recently been used to bring in materials for building the Trans-Arabian Pipeline.
