Conscient de l'importance fondamentale d'une méthodologie rigoureuse, Marey imagina en 1895 cet institut, dans le but d'obtenir une standardisation et un contrôle des instruments physiologiques inscripteurs, et ainsi d'avoir des résultats fiables et reproductibles. Marey réussit peu à peu à obtenir des fonds, et, en 1903, l'Institut Marey devint fonctionnel et reconnu établissement d'utilité publique. Marey décéda l'année suivante et Chauveau lui succéda comme directeur. Cet institut représenta un laboratoire de technique instrumentale fondamental et très renommé. Ce premier volume, le plus recherché, comporte un bel éloge de Marey et un long rapport d'Athanasiu (professeur de physiologie à l'université de Bucarest) sur la méthode graphique, notamment sur la standardisation des appareils, illustré de 96 figures. On y trouve, en complément de l'éloge de Marey prononcé par Kronecker lors du Congrès de Bruxelles, deux autres essais. Le second consistait en un court traité technique sur la galvanométrie et la galvanographie ; rédigé par Auguste Désiré Waller. Le premier essai, écrit par J. Athanasiu, professeur d e physiologie à l'université de Bucarest, constituait la contribution de l'Institut Marey à la standardisation des appareillages physiologiques. Dans cet essai, Athanasiu, décrivait les instruments de contrôle. Ainsi se trouvait pleinement et concrètement réalisé l'objectif "mareysien" de standardisation et d'uniformisation des pratiques instrumentales en physiologie. L'appareillage permettait le contrôle des inscripteurs à stylet, avec un double mécanisme capable d'engendrer un mouvement étalon, variable à discrétion et inscrit sur un support graphique puis de transmettre le dit mouvement, sans aucune altération, à l'instrument testé (ce dernier fournissant un tracé identique au tracé de référence).
