First Edition. Illustrations by M. Napier Waller. Pp. 50(including the upper pastedown, last colophon)+[2](blank), 2 plates; f'cap. 4to; pictorial stiff beige paper wrappers, illustrated by Napier Waller, with printed upper flap, faintly soiled, edges lightly rubbed; uncut; upper hinge starting, tiny chip to fore-edge pages 19/20, a couple of faint water stains to pages on either side of the two plates; Vidler, Melbourne, n.d.[1919]. First edition. *A two act play, intended to combine elements of stage and cinema. Evelyn John Rupert Atkinson (1881-1961) initially studied to become a doctor, but abandoned his medical studies to devote himself to literature. According to the ADB: 'For the next four decades, almost uniquely in Australian letters, Atkinson was to lead the life of a leisured gentleman, poet and playwright . . . Between 1919 and 1928 he published several plays, including two involving 'cinematic back-projection'. The present work is one of those two, and Atkinson describes his ideas in the Preface: 'Several years ago it occurred to me that the lifeless artificial scenery used in theatres could be most effectually replaced by cinema-views of people and objects, cast from behind the screen, and made to harmonise with the acting on the stage.' Atkinson was associated with E. A. Vidler in the Australian Institute of the Arts and Literature. As well as most of Atkinson's plays, Vidler published Napier Waller's War Pictures on the Somme Front, which was based on sketches the artist had made during the war, and later exhibited with great success in 1918 and 1919. Waller's illustrations for the present work were presumably intended to convey the kind of 'cinematic back-projection' Atkinson envisaged for his play.
