Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Dates matter, and they are often a starting point for our engagement with history. For most New Zealanders, days like 6 February or 25 April are laden with significance. They are recognised as markers of important moments in our past; they inspire pride, connection, reflection, or perhaps co…ntroversy. Some dates hold a sombre or sinister place in the nations collective memory: 15 March (the Christchurch mosque attacks), 12 October (Passchendaele) or 24 December (Tangiwai). Others highlight more uplifting moments, like Rutherfords Nobel Prize (10 December 1908), Hillarys ascent of Everest (29 May 1953) or New Zealands golden hour at the Rome Olympics (2 September 1960). This book presents a series of snapshots of New Zealand historical events organised by date, from 1 January to 31 December. They range from dramatic headline moments to the hopefully less familiar and sometimes downright quirky from Jockey Y-fronts (16 March 1940) and a Nazi sabotage hoax (29 March 1942) to the Greymouth beer boycott (29 September 1947) and a parachuting Santa (20 November 1937). A timeline lists some of the key moments and events that have helped shape the course of New Zealands political and constitutional development, while Born on this Day boxes scattered throughout the text provide brief biographical details on almost 100 figures of significance to New Zealand history, fully updated. By the Ministry for Culture and Heritage and the Alexander Turnbull Library, this glorious, fully illustrated discovery of New Zealands key times brings history to life. Each day of the year features a story ranging from the nation-forming to the quirky. Born on this Day boxes scattered throughout provide details on around 100 significant figures. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Softcover. Condition: Very Good. In the first comprehensive history of the vote and elections published in New Zealand, Neill Atkinson traces the evolution of a distinctive democracy since the beginning of representative government in the 1850s. From the creation of Maori seats in 1867 and the world-leading women's suffrage legi…slation of 1893, to the dramatic transition to proportional representation in the 1990s, New Zealand's democratic innovations have been shaped by pragmatism, principles and personalities. Illustrated with over 100 photographs, cartoons and posters, this book also looks at how elections were organized, how candidates and political parties ran their campaigns, and how the new media of radio and television changed elections forever. 319 pages.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good clean copy. During WW2 thousands of New Zealanders served in NZ, British and other Allied merchant marines. Many braved the deadly German U-Boat threat during the Battle of the Atlantic - the longest campaign of the war - and sailed in perilous convoys to Arctic Russia,…Malta and other high risk routes. Others manned transport and hospital ships and took part in the Allied landings in North Africa, Italy and Normandy. According to official statistics 105 Kiwi merchant seafarers were killed, with 128 taken prisoner, five of whom died in Japanese captivity, although these figures are artificially low, with many others listed as general British losses.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A very clean copy which feels unread. Following the successful publication of the larger format Oral History Series, these titles are being re-released in trade at a lower price point, in order to meet the increasing interest in military history. During WW2 thousands of New Zealande…rs served in New Zealand, British and other Allied merchant marines. Many braved the deadly German U-Boat threat during the Battle of the Atlantic - the longest campaign of the war - and sailed in perilous convoys to Arctic Russia, Malta and other high risk routes. Others manned transport and hospital ships and took part in the Allied landings in North Africa, Italy and Normandy, with 105 100 Kiwi merchant seafarers killed, 28 taken prisoner, five of whom died in Japanese captivity, but these figures are artificially low, with many others listed as general British losses. While these figures are small compared to other services, no other civilian group faced such constant risk and the vital contribution of this 'fourth' service has never received the recognition it deserves. The book includes firsthand accounts from men who survived air and submarine attacks, sometimes enduring days adrift in open lifeboats, a seaman awarded the George Cross during the 1942 pedestal convoy to relieve Malta and another who spent three years in Changi prison, amongst many other stirring and poignant accounts of life at war.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good clean copy with only light shelf wear. Railways have played a central role in New Zealand politics, economics, trade union history, tourism and popular culture. Yet rail history has been largely neglected by professional historians. While the field has long been popular…with enthusiasts, they have tended to focus on locomotive and rolling stock minutiae, engineering feats and so on, and have paid little attention to social and cultural aspects. This stunning looking book includes a brief outline of the development of rail in NZ; and looks at who uses the trains and why; daily life on and off the rails; the train in popular culture and the collective memory. Neill Atkinson is a professional historian with the Ministry of Culture and Heritage in Wellington and the depth of his research is matched by the accessibility of his writing. Neill Atkinson's Crew Culture is a vivid social history of the men who worked New Zealand's ships from the 1840s through to the end of the Second World War. Rather than focusing on famous vessels or heroic captains, Atkinson turns his attention to the… everyday seafarers — the deckhands, firemen, stewards, trimmers, and mates whose labour kept the coastal and international trades moving.

Soft Covers. Condition: NF. No Jacket. 1st. New Zealand, as an island nation is, and always has been, dependent on the sea for its international communications. Vital to this has been those who manned the ships that have brought the produce it needs and carried the exports that provide its wealth. In early times the sea also pro…vided trade and passenger links on all its coasts. This excellent study of NZ seafaring over the first century of the country's development explores an area little covered in the multitude of nautical books with NZ emphis and content --- the life and work of the ships crews in both the age of sail and of steam. Atkinson, a professional historian, has divided his work into eigh chapters --- Canvas and Coal (which examines work at sea); A Murderous Occupation (health and hazards); Songs and Stories (lore of the sea); Three Groans For the Skipper (control and conflict); Unity is Strength (seafaring unionism); On the Beach (the waterfront) and The Brotherhood of the Sea (crew culture.) Through these the author builds a graphic picture of all aspects of seafaring, a unique way of life and one which contributed so much to the development of NZ. Atkinson's comprehensive text dispalys his deep knowledge of his subject and is complemented by a magnificent collection of b/w illustrations, mainly photographs, but also art reproductions, drawings, diagrams, graphs and maps. Publisher Te Papa Press is the imprint of the Museum of New Zealand at Wellington, first edition of 2001, 172 pages including list of abbreviations, bibliography, glossary and index, illustrated in b/w throughout. Pictorial card covers with flaps at front and rear are NF, ditto the text block, no inscriptions. Photos, Art, Drawings, Diagrams, Maps (illustrator).
