Beneath Professor's Kauzmann's name on the half-title page is his note: "This copy contains corrections." Laid-in is a 5-page outline for Kauzmann's course at Princeton Univerity, CHEMISTRY 305, PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY, for which this book was required reading. [This copy bears the signature stamp (in 5 places) of Professor Walter Kauzmann of Princeton University. Kauzmann's work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos in 1944-45 contributed to the successful development of the atomic bomb, nicknamed "Fat Man," which incinerated Nagasaki, and was soon followed by Japan's capitulation. It was in 1948 that Kauzmann's classic review of liquid supercooling and glass formation drew attention to temperatures at which entropies and enthalpies of liquid and crystal phases would appear to become equal. The collection of such "Kauzmann temperatures" produced characteristic curves in the temperature-pressure (T, p) plane. Professor Kauzmann was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1966]. Bound in the original green cloth. Complete with dust jacket. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Text in English and Japanese. [6], 44 (with facing color illustrations), (9) pages. Glossary. Name in ink on title page. Slight cover wear. Format is approximately 7.25 inches by 10 inches. Includes Greetings from Shigefumi Matsuzasa, Governor of Kanagawa Prefecture. By the end of 1945, the atomic bombings of Japan had killed an estimated 140,000 people at Hiroshima and 74,000 at Nagasaki, including those who died from radiation poisoning. Often lost in those numbers are the experiences of the survivors, known as hibakusha (literally "atomic bomb-affected people"). Since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan has been a world leader in the anti-nuclear movement. This movement was also prompted in part by American hydrogen bomb tests in the Marshall Islands in 1954. During the Castle Bravo test, the largest ever conducted by the United States, fallout reached a Japanese fishing boat named Daigo Fukury Maru or "Fifth Lucky Dragon," located 80 miles east of the test site.
