The historic 51 Market Street house in Manhattan is one of the first buildings to be landmarked in New York City, in 1965 when the landmark commission was created. It was also added to the national registry of historic places in 1977. NRHP reference #77000959. It was built in the late federal style for the grocer William Clark in 1825. This historic house is also known as the William and Rosamond Clark House, and is located between Madison and Monroe Streets in lower Manhattan in New York City in what is now Chinatown. The now four story house was first built as a two-story gambrelled house in 1824-25 at a time when the Lower East Side was an affluent residential neighborhood. The upper two stories were added late in the 19th century. The house has been described as a "superb" example of the Federal style.
