Die Novelle "Aucassin und Nicolette" steht in der Literatur des Mittelalters einzig da. - Aucassin und Nicolette ist eine mittel…alterliche Liebesgeschichte in Prosa und Versen, die in der deutschen Übersetzung von Friedrich von Oppeln-Bronikowski in einer modernen Ausgabe zugänglich gemacht wurde. Die Erzählung verbindet romantische, märchenhafte und teilweise ironische Elemente und schildert die außergewöhnliche Liebe zwischen dem jungen Ritter Aucassin und der schönen Nicolette. Aucassin, der Sohn eines Grafen, verliebt sich in Nicolette, die jedoch eine unbekannte Herkunft hat und als Sklavin bzw. Gefangene aufgewachsen ist. Obwohl sie sich gegenseitig tief lieben, stoßen sie auf den Widerstand von Aucassins Vater, der eine standesgemäße Ehe für seinen Sohn anstrebt und Nicolette ablehnt. Diese gesellschaftlichen Unterschiede bilden das zentrale Hindernis ihrer Liebe. Trotz aller Verbote versucht Aucassin immer wieder, Nicolette zu sehen und für sie einzutreten. Seine Leidenschaft führt dazu, dass er sich weigert, als Ritter zu kämpfen oder gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen zu entsprechen. Dadurch wird er zeitweise sogar eingesperrt oder verstoßen. Nicolette hingegen zeigt Mut, Klugheit und Entschlossenheit und gelingt es schließlich, aus ihrer Gefangenschaft zu entkommen. Im weiteren Verlauf der Geschichte geraten die beiden getrennt voneinander in abenteuerliche Situationen. Nicolette findet Zuflucht in einer anderen Umgebung und lebt zeitweise verborgen, während Aucassin nach ihr sucht und verschiedene Prüfungen durchsteht. Ihre Liebe bleibt jedoch trotz aller Hindernisse bestehen. Am Ende führt eine Reihe glücklicher Zufälle dazu, dass sich die Liebenden wiederfinden. Die gesellschaftlichen Barrieren verlieren ihre Bedeutung, und Aucassin und Nicolette können schließlich zusammenkommen. Die Erzählung endet versöhnlich und betont den Sieg der Liebe über soziale Unterschiede und äußere Zwänge. Insgesamt erzählt Aucassin und Nicolette eine ungewöhnliche Liebesgeschichte, die romantische Ideale mit spielerischer Erzählweise verbindet. Das Werk hebt die Kraft der Liebe hervor, die sich gegen gesellschaftliche Regeln und Standesgrenzen behauptet, und zählt zu den bekanntesten Liebesdichtungen des europäischen Mittelalters. - Deckel minimal berieben, sonst in einem sehr gutem Zustand.
