Son cartas íntimas, donde incluso en alguna oportunidad Auerbach y Benjamin discuten a propósito de un posible plagio de Fromm a Benjamin. El libro abunda en notas aclaratorias y referencias a las personas mencionadas en las cartas, que son muchas. Estas notas se ubican al final del texto.
