Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a critique of the Wesleyan Methodist church, focusing on the tension between the itinerant preachers and the local membership. The author argues that the preachers have assumed excessive authority, violating the principles of Methodism as established by John Wesley. The bo…ok explores the history of Methodism, examining the original intent of Wesley's reforms and the subsequent evolution of the church's governance. The author provides a detailed analysis of the key issues in the dispute, including the role of the laity, the authority of the preachers, and the interpretation of Methodist doctrine. This book offers a valuable perspective on the ongoing debate within Methodism and sheds light on the broader themes of religious authority, congregational autonomy, and the balance between tradition and innovation in religious institutions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Two volumes, 12mo (175 x 100 mm), engraved frontispiece to the first volume and pp. [vi], vi, [5]-270; [ii], [5]-301, [1], 2 table, the first title with circular engraved… vignette, with two further engraved plates, A scarce French translation of Henriette Bellmann, ein Gemählde schöner Herzen, Berlin, 1802, published as part of his ?Familiengeschichten? (Family Stories) series, by the indefatigable Lafontaine, whose extraordinary output filled the circulating libraires of Europe. Like so many of Lafontaine?s novels, this was a widely popular work, seeing translations into French, English - Henrietta Bellmann, or the New Family Picture, London, Vernor and Hood, 1804 - and Swedish, published in Stockholm by Marquard, 1802-1803. ?Lafontaine?s novels hardly reflect the society of the time, not even when he treated current themes. What he created was a sort of petty bourgeois utopia: in contemporary or in historical settings he pictured a patriarchal society free from conflicts, with a static hierarchy. Virtues like fidelity, obedience and contentment are praised. Love is the core of this utopia and has the redeeming capacity to heal breaches? (Björkman, Margarata, High and Low: Some Remarks on the Reading Culture of the Late Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Centuries, 2013). OCLC lists the National Library of Poland only for this second edition; the 1803 first edition listed at Bodleian, Trinity Dublin, UCLA and Yale.
