Small octavo, three issues, printed wrappers. The first three issues of a digest magazine printing new and reprint fiction that ran for 36 issues between August 1963 and April 1971. A fine magazine, plagued by Acme's mismanagement and poor distribution but despite which was paying its way, that was terminated when Countrywide Publications acquired it from Acme in late 1970. Editor Robert A. W. Lowndes "conceded that its poor distribution meant that MAGAZINE OF HORROR would have a small readership, but that the true collectors and lovers of the genre would hunt down each issue no matter what. Consequently, he tailored the magazine for the devotee, and to this end he succeeded admirably" (Mike Ashley). Parnell, Monthly Terrors, p. 132. Tymn and Ashley (eds), Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Weird Fiction Magazines, pp. 391-396. Spine panels sunned, spine ends of two issues lightly worn, text blocks lightly tanned; all three issues very good. (#176514).

Octavo, thirty-six issues, pictorial wrappers. Digest size magazine. This publication included new and reprint fiction. Reprints coming mainly from the pulps and with the knowledgeable editor and his two consultants Robert A. Madle and Sam Moskowitz, stories long out of print and virtually unobtainable were reprinted. Lowndes was also able to print stories by some old time writers which had been unpublished. Editor Lowndes was also able to capitalize on the resurgence of Robert E. Howard of the mid 1960s with publication of several unpublished stories including a Conan story (Spring 1967, #15). Newer material included writers as Stephen Goldin, Joanna Russ, Roger Zelazny, August Derleth, Joseph Payne Brennan, Robert Silverberg, and others. [Reference: Tymm and Ashley, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Weird Fiction Magazines, pp. 391-395]. A nearly fine to fine set. (31559).
