As a report, and later as a Chamber of Commerce and advertising executive, he was acquainted with governors and Seminoles, gangsters and J. D. Rockefeller, Sr. He not only observed history-in-the-making but helped shape the state and community he loved, leaving his stamp on state and national parks, aviation, city government and the Swimming Hall of Fame. In Half a Century in Florida, this venerable Southern gentleman has recorded events as he experienced them, in many cases drawing from unique source materials. His photographs provide a particularly appealing look at where we have come from as we approach the end of the century. August Burghard, as this volume attests, has had a long and happy life in South Florida, which he shares here with many readers who may envy him his "Land of Matters Unforgot."
