Signed and inscribed on the blank verso side of the half-title page by the translator, Arvid Paulson. The inscription reads :'To __ Samuel W. Moore-- with the gratitude of Arvid Paulson, 11 August 1966.' Both the book and the dust jacket are in nice condition. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are mostly clean, only a few light spots on the front cover. The black lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The bottom edge of the spine has a thin crinkle. The cover edges are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The same goes for the four cover corners. There's one little bump, hardly a bump, just above the front bottom edge. The page edges look very clean. The spine is straight and the book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are black. They look very good, very clean. The pages look very clean as well. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I'm not finding any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the translator's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. I have always had the dust jacket in a fitted protective cover. The jacket is in very solid shape. There is a small scuff at the bottom edge of the spine. There is a small white spot on the rear cover. And there are some dark areas on the white part of the rear cover. The flaps are in very nice shape. There is a tiny crease just above the tip of the front bottom corner. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. From the jacket: 'The translator, Arvid Paulson, has translated more works from the Scandinavian languages than anyone heretofore; among these, works by Ibsen, Bjornson, Selma Lagerlof, Vilhelm Moberg, Prince William of Sweden, and others. In 1964 the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters awarded Paulson its gold medal, the first time it has been given for translations of Swedish into a foreign language.' From Wikipedia: 'The People of Hemso is an 1887 novel by August Strindberg about the life of people of the island Hemsö in the Stockholm archipelago. Hemsö is a fictional island, but it is based on Kymmendo where Strindberg had spent time in his youth. Strindberg wrote the book to combat his homesickness while living abroad in Germany and France. Written during a difficult period in exile from Sweden, the novel paradoxically has a strong sense of place, and is a feat of straightforward folksy storytelling. Mrs. Anna Eva Flod, a widow of some means, hires Johannes Edvard Carlsson to run the farm on the island. As a newcomer and a landlubber among sailors and fishermen, Carlsson is implicitly distrusted by the locals as they try to discern whether he is a slippery confidence trickster preying on the lonely widow, or an honest, hard-working man revitalizing the neglected farm. The Swedish-born American actor and translator Arvid Paulson apologizes for not writing sooner to City Center director Jean Dalrymple, "I became ill arriving in Helsingborg, and the day after arrival in Stockholm - during a violent snowstorm with snow up to the knee - fell down a precipice and injured my leg severely." He goes on to describe the "lovely roomy apartment" he is confined to in the interim and then requests "I wonder whether you are on any committee distributing grants, Jean? If you are and if the group at Huntington (which several years ago gave 30 performances of Hedda Gabler from my translation) should request a grant, it ought not be given until they pay me $400 that they owe me. Our agreement - made over the telephone with Richard Jamieson, the director - was originally for $25 a performance, but when they pleaded insufficient income when the presentation was over, I told them that I would accept $400." Signed "Arvid". Jean Dalrymple has underlined the date and the word "Huntington" and circled the amount in red felt. Fine. The Swedish-born American actor Arvid Paulson (1875-1977) was a translator of the works of August Strindberg. Some of his correspondence and papers as well as his translations of Strindberg are in the New York Public Library's Theatre Collection. There is also material in the collection relating to a proposed exhibit on Strindberg and Ibsen as well as a portion of his unfinished script for a musical about European Jews during the Second World War. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.

Mai 1912 ebenda) war ein schwedischer Schriftsteller und Künstler. Er gilt als einer der wichtigsten schwedischen Autoren, besonders seine Dramen sind weltbekannt. Von den späten 1870er Jahren bis zu seinem Tod dominierte er die Literaturszene in Schweden, war umstritten und oft in persönliche Konflikte verwickelt. Zu seinem umfangreichen literarischen Werk gehören Romane, Novellen und Dramen, die zu den Klassikern schwedischer Literatur zählen. . Eine neue Wende tritt mit den Erfahrungen der "Inferno-Krise" ein. Strindberg begreift sein Dasein als den Weg eines irrenden Menschen, wie er es in Nach Damaskus schildert. Der alternde Strindberg wendet sich mehr und mehr der Religion zu. Als Anhänger des Symbolismus sucht er nach möglichen Deutungen für die Dinge und findet sie zum Teil in mystischen Erklärungen der Welt. Er beschäftigt sich mit Okkultismus und Monismus. Die Texte von Emanuel Swedenborg beeinflussen ihn ebenso wie die Theosophie von Helena Petrovna Blavatsky. Am Ende seines Lebens war er Synkretist und identifizierte sich mit einer Art Weltseele, mit der er durch das Unterbewusstsein in Verbindung zu stehen meinte. Diese existentiellen Spekulationen machen sich in seiner späteren Produktion bemerkbar (z. B. im Traumspiel). Bei seinem Tod 1912 hatte Strindberg in seiner Bibliothek eine große Menge theosophischer Literatur, unter anderem von Annie Besant und Alfred Percy Sinnett, zusammen mit Büchern über Mythologie und Religionsgeschichte. Strindbergs Interesse für Alchemie und Okkultismus war zu seiner Zeit keineswegs eine Seltenheit. Im Gegenteil - gerade in Paris gab es eine blühende Bewegung, zahlreiche Schriften wurden veröffentlicht, u. a. in der Zeitschrift L'Initiation, für die auch Strindberg einige Artikel schrieb.
