Drei Postkarten von 1906-1909 aus Karlsruhe. Der Astronom und Entomologe August Weiler (1827-1911) wendet sich an den Naturalienhändler, Forschungsreisenden und Entomologen Carl Ribbe (1860-1934) in Radebeul bei Dresden. Der Verfasser ist im Karlsruher Adressbuch von 1908 unter der Adresse Ritterstraße 18 als Professor a.D. verzeichnet. --- August Weiler war von 1851 bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1880 Professor für Mathematik am Realgymnasium Mannheim gewesen und zog danach nach Karlsruhe, wo er sich seinen Forschungen auf dem Gebiete der mathematischen Geographie und der Astronomie widmete. Transkriptionen: Karlsruhe, 8. November 1906: "Geehrter Herr Ribbe! Sie erhalten dieses Mal 42 Papilio. Einige Fühlhörner, die angebrochen waren, habe ich reservirt, um sie später wieder anzuheften. Hochachtungsvoll A. Weiler." Karlsruhe, Ritterstraße 18, 5. März 1909: "Geehrter Herr Ribbe! Ich erhielt Ihr werthes Schreiben vom 23. Febr. Die angesagten Präparate sind bis dahin noch nicht bei mir angekommen. Hochachtungsv. A. Weiler Prof. a.D." Karlsruhe, Ritterstraße 18, 9. März 1909: "Geehrter Herr Ribbe! Die übersanden Präparate erstrecken sich zum Theil auf wenig auffallende Arten. Hätten Sie mir einen Morpho amathonde, 1 Morpho Cypris, 1 ornithoptera pegasus übersendet (die in meiner Sammlung vorräthig sind), so würden Ihre Präparate mehr Beifall finden. Hochachtungsvoll A. Weiler Prof. a.D." 5-Pfennig-Ganzsachen (ca. 9,2 x 14 cm). Über den Verfasser: Johann August Weiler wurde am 31. Mai 1827 in Mainz als Sohn des Angestellten bei den Zivil-Hospizien Johann Martin Weiler und der Sara, geb. Haenlein geboren und starb unverheiratet am 22. Juli 1911 in Karlsruhe als Professor a.D. Er ist im Entmologen-Adressbuch von 1905 als Schmetterlingskundler verzeichnet. Er veröffentlichte auch einige astronomische Werke, z.B. "Über das Problem der drei Körper im Allgemeinen, und insbesondere auf seine Anwendung auf die Theorie des Mondes" (Leipzig 1866) oder "Grundzüge einer neuen Störungstheorie und deren Anwendung auf die Theorie des Mondes" (Leipzig 1872). Zustand: Karten gebräunt und teils stärker fleckig. Über den Verfasser (Quelle: Nachruf in Astronomische Nachrichten, Jg. 1911, S. 367): Nekrolog: Im Alter von 84 Jahren starb zu Mannheim Anfang Oktober (!) 1911 Professor Dr. Johann August Weiler. Geboren am 31. Mai 1827 in Mainz, wirkte Weiler nach Vollendung seiner Studien zuerst von 1850 bis 1851 als Lehrer der Mathematik an der höheren Gewerbeschule zu Darmstadt, dann seit 1851 in gleicher Eigenschaft an der höheren Bürgerschule in Mannheim, die später in ein Realgymnasium umgewandelt wurde. Neben den Pflichten des Berufes widmete er sich schon bald Forschungen auf dem Gebiete der mathematischen Geographie und der Astronomie und ward, um sich ganz diesen Arbeiten hingeben zu können, schon 1880 emeritiert. Er siedelte dann nach Karlsruhe über und setzte hier seine Arbeiten auf dem Gebiete der Störungstheorie und der Theorie der Mondbewegung in umfassender Weise fort. Diese Arbeiten, die zu einem großen Teile in den Astronomischen Nachrichten Aufnahme gefunden haben, sichern seinem Namen in der Geschichte der theoretischen Astronomie ein dauerndes, ehrenvolles Andenken.
