Le docteur Nemours Auguste, né en 1850, sera également diplomate et chargé d'affaires auprès de Jacques Nicolas Léger en 1912 ; il est le père du général, diplomate et historien militaire Alfred Auguste Nemours, né en 1883. L'ouvrage ici présenté est très souvent attribué à ce célèbre fils (notice BNF) voire au père et au fils. Pourtant, Léon-François HOFFMANN, éminent spécialiste de la littérature et de la culture d'Haïti, l'attribue au Docteur Auguste et l'a retenu parmi 'les oeuvres les plus marquantes de la littérature haïtienne' dans son essai 'Littérature d'Haïti' (EDICEF, 1995). Rare ouvrage pour la défense de la culture française en Haïti face à la montée de l'influence américaine. "La menace américaine envers la prépondérance française était même d'ordre culturel. En effet, c'est ainsi qu'il faut interpréter, à notre sens, le grand débat qui prit place au tournant du siècle, culmina précisément en 1908-1910, et divisa les 'faiseurs d'opinion publique' en Haïti sur les mérites respectifs de la culture latine et de la mentalité anglo-saxonne, sous-entendons par là l'esprit français et l'esprit américain.
