William Daniell RA (1769 - 1837) was an English painter and printmaker who specialized in landscape painting and marine art. He travelled extensively in India in the company of his uncle Thomas Daniell, with whom he collaborated on one of the finest illustrated works of the period - Oriental Scenery. He later travelled around the coastline of Britain to paint watercolors for the equally ambitious book A Voyage Round Great Britain. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution and he became a Royal Academician in 1822. This translation was commissioned very shortly after the launch of The Oriental Annual series in Great Britain, and considerable effort was made to keep pace with the original publication schedule. It was, therefore, a highly successful book?yet one with a singular genesis. Its author, Caunter?who had been sent to India as a cadet?famously declared that he had found nothing there of any interest to him. only to spend the rest of his life writing about it! In doing so, he contributed to a cultural craze that would have consequences of the utmost gravity: with the last Mughal Emperor finally deposed in 1857, the East India Company ceded authority to the Crown the very next year; and?as a testament to the symbolic significance this region had acquired?the crowning moment of the Victorian era arrived in 1876 with the proclamation of Queen Victoria as Empress of India. In France, the work was presented primarily as the creation of William Daniell, given the renown?both past and present?enjoyed by this illustrator, who had first discovered India at the age of fourteen while accompanying his uncle, the painter Thomas Daniell. First French Edition. Complete set + plates. RAREF1864DTVO - 04/26 - HK3525.
