This book chronicles the arrival of a doctor to a village in the 1860s where an epidemic of demonic possession has taken hold, affecting over 100 people, primarily young women and children. As the doctor investigates, he uncovers a community steeped in superstitious beliefs but also one suffering from poverty, isolation, and poor health. Despite the villagers' conviction that the cause of the affliction is supernatural, the doctor believes it to be a psychological phenomenon, exacerbated by fear and the influence of manipulative individuals. The doctor's attempts to treat the patients and convince the villagers of his theory face resistance, highlighting the challenges of combating deeply held beliefs and the power of mass hysteria. The book offers a fascinating glimpse into a forgotten chapter of medical history, exploring the complex interplay between mental health, social factors, and cultural beliefs. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A fascinating report on a possession epidemic in Morzine, Haute-Savoie, in 1861. The epidemic affected 120 women from Morzine. They heard the Devil's voice, or he began to speak through their mouths. They experienced hallucinations and convulsions. Exorcisms were performed "everywhere and often". A ceremony is held in a ruined church, where a dog is disembowelled and its liver torn out. This liver is larded with sabres, buried in the middle of the chapel, and is cursed by those present, with signs and cabalistic words from the operator. The operator is "a foreigner calling himself a magnetizer", says the author. Is it Allan Kardec? We know that Allan Kardec, the founder of Spiritism, visited Morzine and published several articles on the subject. "All these women experienced the sensation of a body which, stirring in their stomachs, rose to their throats and suffocated them, strangled them: for them, it was one or more devils." But what Doctor Constans, an inspector of the insane wards, describes above all is the incredible misery that prevails in this area, at an altitude of 1,500 meters. People live in complete isolation. 90% of the population can't read, they're puny and inbred. But they are gentle, honest and devout. And how credulous! In the 16th century, the author reminds us, in Savoy "an infinite number of people were possessed by demons". This poor, isolated population is still what it was then. Doctor Constans diagnoses an epidemic of hysteria in this valley, "hysterodemonopathy", he adds. He concludes his work by asserting that spiritualism provides "a rather remarkable contingent to the population of insane asylums every year." Despite the mention of 2nd edition on the title, this is the first edition in books. This text was published as a serial in the magazine "L'Union médicale". -.
