Hardcover. designer: Ernst Reichl (illustrator). xix, 234 p.; 21.5 cm. Contents: I. Love of man and love of God (1-5) -- II. On the holy days (6-10) -- III. Pagans and heretics (11-15) -- IV. Christianity prefigures (16-19) -- V. The world of the present and the world to come (20-23) -- VI. Diverse topics (24-29) -- Epilogue: life in Christ (30) -- `After reading the sermons contained in Migne, volumes 38 and 39, and those in Morin's text--a total of somewhat more than 500--I found about 60 that seemed particularly persuasive, instructive, beautiful, or memorable. From these I selected 30 [PL 34 385 161 392 349 184 194 201 224, Mai 95, PL 360 183 348 150 241 1 364 10 300 81 374, Guelferb. 1, PL 22 73 43 273 274 355 340, Mai 126] that give as wide a representation as possible of Augustine's thought. Although the method of selection is naturally colored by my likes and dislikes, I believe I have done justice to every major topic covered within the sermons. Three of the sermons in this collection (2, 17, and 29 [PL 385 364 340]) are now attributed to St. Caesar of Arles (ca. 470-542). Their legitimacy in a collection of St. Augustine's sermons can be defended by the fact that St. Caesar, who was an heir to antiquity's liberal view of plagiarism, appropriated these sermons from St. Augustine, merely adding his own exordium or conclusion or changing a word here and there.' Leder. Condition: Gut. Folio, 38,5 x 27 cm. 1542-1543. 1438 Spalten; 134 Blatt, 1 Blatt Errata. BEIGEGEBEN: Kurt Flasch "Augustin. Einführung in sein Denken." Reclam (= UB 9962) 1980, {ISBN 3-15-029962-4} 487 Seiten. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. In Hebrew. [2], x, 126 pages. 22 x 14 cm. Original wrappers bound in. WorldCat: Libraries worldwide that own item: 3. Paul Philip Levertoff (14 October 1878 Orsha, Belarus - 31 July 1954 London ) was born a Jew, graduated from the Volozhin Yeshiva, changed his name from Feivel, converted to Christianity in 1895, married the Welsh Beatrice Levertoff, daughter of a Methodist pastor, moved to England in 1918, became an Anglican Church clergyman and missionary to the Jews and translated the Anglican liturgy and other material into Hebrew. His self-hatred knew no bounds and in the 1930s became a supporter of the policies of Franco's Spain, Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany. His daughter was the American writer Denise Levertov. Levertoff's translation into Hebrew of St. Augustine Confessions is incomplete. He translates books 1 to 9 and fragments of book 10 and 12. He neglects to translate the sentence in Book 12 where St. Augustine states: "How hateful to me are the enemies of your Scripture! How I wish that you would slay them with your two-edged sword, so that there should be none to oppose your word! Gladly would I have them die to themselves and live to you." In his defense, Augustine did not believe that all the Jews should be murdered. He and his followers believed that the Jews must be allowed to survive but in great misery, so their condition would be viewed as punishment for their supposed complicity in Jesus' execution and for their refusal to convert to Christianity. The survival of the Jews in Europe through the centuries in which the church had great power was not due to a miracle but rather to the Augustinian position that they should survive but not thrive.
