Diverse topics (24-29) -- Epilogue: life in Christ (30) -- `After reading th…e sermons contained in Migne, volumes 38 and 39, and those in Morin's text--a total of somewhat more than 500--I found about 60 that seemed particularly persuasive, instructive, beautiful, or memorable. From these I selected 30 [PL 34 385 161 392 349 184 194 201 224, Mai 95, PL 360 183 348 150 241 1 364 10 300 81 374, Guelferb. 1, PL 22 73 43 273 274 355 340, Mai 126] that give as wide a representation as possible of Augustine's thought. Although the method of selection is naturally colored by my likes and dislikes, I believe I have done justice to every major topic covered within the sermons. Three of the sermons in this collection (2, 17, and 29 [PL 385 364 340]) are now attributed to St. Caesar of Arles (ca. 470-542). Their legitimacy in a collection of St. Augustine's sermons can be defended by the fact that St. Caesar, who was an heir to antiquity's liberal view of plagiarism, appropriated these sermons from St. Augustine, merely adding his own exordium or conclusion or changing a word here and there.' A collection of works on the Semipelagian controversy, mostly by St. Augustine but also including essays by St. Prosper of Aquitaine and Hilary, Bp. of Arles and head of the Semipelagian party. The Semipelagians believed that salvation could be begun by unaided human will but required grace to accomplish it, the Pelagians that salvation could be achieved solely through human effort; St. Augustine argued that grace was necessary for salvation from beginning to end.

Contact seller5-star sellerSmall Octavo. A remarkable volume on Augustine's works on predestination and Pelagianism [primarily used in opposition to Luther's works] bound together as a sammelband. Most have been printed by Bernardino Stagnino (1483-1538). This volume was once from the library of William Snelling Hadaway (1872-1941) who likely acquired the…m when he and his then wife left for Italy in 1894. The rarity of these works is that most exist in less than two or three copies but based upon an examination in OCLC are not usually bound together. The six works of St. Augustine and three of Prosper Opusula relate to grace, free will and predestination. Stagino's full name was Bernardino Giolito de Ferrarei and he published in his career 193 editions calling himself a libnorum mercator (a businessman). Although he published books of devotion and literature before 1500, he later began to supply serious scholarly editions with very nice woodcut initials and borders(as with this copy), intricate layouts of typography, and wood block engravings primarily for his title pages. Diane E. Booten in the Library Quarterly (Vol. 83, No. 1 (January 2013), p. 39-41, notes: During his career, Stagnino used at least three printer devices with variations.he represented the saint with the IHS monogram and three cast off miters. While many of these items appear on OCLC, it lists only a page count. We have provided an exact collation on each item to avoid any confusion. Most are italic type with transitional Roman type on some title pages. There are a few contemporary brown ink notations in the margins and some occasional short underlining. His use of Nota (instead of N.B) was typical of the early 16th century. Bound in contemporary light brown limp vellum, the spine written in heavy black ink: D. AURELII. AUGUST. HIPPON. The opening blank endpaper has various penciling from a later date, while the first free endpaper and its verso has a long (near contemporary) guide to the contents of the work. The volume has a newer brown cloth dust jacket, spine lettered in gilt and held within a brown cloth covered slipcase for protection. The following is a listing of the works: (Augustine, of Hippo Saint) Divi Avre: LII Avgvstini Hipponernsis Episcopi Contra Pelagianos et Celestianos Hyponosticon Libri VI: Venetiis:Sub signo diui Hieronymi, 1538; Vignette title page. Note: issues of the title page are noted in OCLC: (Augustine, of Hippo Saint) Divi Avrelii Avgvstini Hipponensis Episcopi Enchiridion ad Lavrentivm II. Venetiis; Ad signum putei, 1539. Vignette title page. The subject on the printer's device is of the Samaritan woman at the well [John 4:1ff]. Marius Mercator (born probably in Northern Africa about 390; died shortly after 451) was a Latin Christian ecclesiastical writer best known for his advocacy of Augustinian theology during the Pelagian controversy. He was a friend of St. Augustine In 417 or 418 he was in Rome where he wrote two anti-Pelagian treatises, which he submitted to Augustine of Hippo.[1] He received Epistulae 193 from Augustine around 418. From 429 until about 448 he was in Constantinople. In 429 he was described as a servus Dei. Publisher, Sub signo diui Hieronymi, 1538.
