This book delves into the extraordinary life of a 19th-century American figure, tracing his journey from the depths of the Kentucky wilderness to the hallowed halls of West Point and beyond. Born into a pioneering family facing hardship and loss, the protagonist's early years were marked by solitude and an innate curiosity about the natural world. His thirst for knowledge and unwavering determination led him to defy expectations and pursue an education at the United States Military Academy, where he excelled in his studies and formed lasting bonds with fellow cadets who would later become prominent figures in American history. The author skillfully weaves together personal anecdotes, diary entries, and historical accounts to paint a vivid portrait of a complex and multifaceted individual. Themes of ambition, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge permeate the narrative, offering readers a glimpse into the inner workings of a man driven by a desire to make his mark on the world. As the protagonist navigates the challenges and triumphs of his military career and scientific pursuits, the book explores the broader context of 19th-century America, with its burgeoning advancements in science and technology, and the looming shadows of sectional conflict. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling testament to the transformative power of education and the enduring legacy of a man who dared to dream big and pursue his passions with unwavering determination. His story serves as an inspiration for generations to come, reminding us that even amidst adversity, the human spirit can soar to unimaginable heights. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Map
16 3/4 x 10 3/4 inches. Condition: Very good condition. The is a pre-civil War map of those states that were considered the Western States. It pre-dates the Kansas-Nrbraska Act but was after the Compromise of 1850 meaning in fact the pictured states had become the mid-western states. The map shows the the Illinois and Michigan Canal and the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad which opened to joliet in late 1852. The railroads extension to Rock island would lead one to believe that this is the later 1854 edition of the map. Overall for Ohio to and including Missouri the. map is a capable rendering of the Midwest.
