Thanks to the tape a solid reading copy. An account of Sir Austen Chamberlain's time as one of the few remaining Liberal Unionists after the disasterous 1906 General Election which saw many of the Conservative & Liberal Unionisst MPs ousted from their seats. The account takes the form of letters which Chamberlain wrote home, so that his father, Joseph Chamberlain, who had recently retired from politics due to ill health, could be kept abreast of the political scene. It was through his son that the stricken elder Chamberlain tried to prolong his Parimentary career, particularly in regard to Tariff Reform.…
