Condition: Used. In a world where the most scandalous event is the unfortunate misplacement of a bonnet, Jane Austen?s ?Pride and Prejudice? takes us on a delightful romp through the insufferable intricacies of early 19th-century British society?if early 19th-century British society had been stuffed into a time capsule and unearthed in the 1980s, that is. Published by Oxford University Press, this particular edition is a paradox in itself: a genteel classic with a decidedly modern flair, wrapped in the kind of cover that might make you question whether you?re about to embark on a genteel exploration of societal mores or a stilted lecture on the history of neckwear. Picture this: a time when a well-turned phrase could launch a thousand ships?or at the very least, leave a lasting impression at tea. Our protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet, navigates the treacherous waters of marital prospects with the grace of a swan and the wit of a particularly sharp-tongued parrot. She finds herself entangled in a web of societal expectations, where a mere glance can mean the difference between a romantic rendezvous and a trip to the dreaded spinsterhood. Yet, amidst the glimmering chandeliers and elaborate ballrooms lies a world of unspoken truths and ironic misunderstandings. This edition, printed in the very heart of the 1980s, raises more questions than it answers. Did Austen foresee the future? Did she sense that her characters would be as relevant to the era of shoulder pads and cassette tapes as they were to the Regency period? With every turn of the page, readers are invited to contemplate the absurdity of love, class, and the fact that people were still grappling with the same social faux pas while updating their hairstyles. But let us not forget the charming array of characters! From the haughty Mr. Darcy, whose brooding demeanor might just be a cover for an acute case of social anxiety, to the delightfully silly Mrs. Bennet, who could be the original reality TV star with her flair for melodrama. Each character is painstakingly crafted to reflect the quirks of their time, yet somehow they feel all too relatable in our own perpetually awkward age. You might even find yourself rolling your eyes in recognition at their antics. More than just a romantic tale, ?Pride and Prejudice? serves up a smorgasbord of social commentary, reminding us that people in the past had their own versions of Instagram filters and Tinder profiles?all wrapped in the enchanting allure of historical fiction. The biting satire is as sharp as Lizzy?s wit, and if you squint just right, you can almost see the echoes of modern dating disasters playing out in Austen?s parlor rooms. Condition: This used copy has seen better days?perhaps during a particularly spirited book club meeting where assumptions were made and tea was spilled. The spine is a bit cracked, likely from overzealous page flipping, and the edges are dog-eared like an overly enthusiastic reader took copious notes on every deliciously ironic turn of phrase. There?s a faint scent of old paper that could take you back to a time when reading was a decidedly less digital affair, and the only notifications you received were the ones from your local library. What?s more, the margins have been lovingly annotated by a previous owner who clearly had strong feelings about the romantic inclinations of Mr. Darcy and perhaps even a few too many opinions on lace collars. This book may not just be a window into Austen?s world but also a peek into the musings of a fellow reader, who likely had their own battles with love and societal expectations?much like we all do today. So, if you ever find yourself pondering what it must have been like to navigate the complexities of love while wearing corsets and dodging societal expectations, look no further than this quirky Oxford edition of ?Pride and Prejudice.? It?s a delightful addition to your bookshelf?especially if you fancy a good chuckle at the absurdities of human nature. You won?t just be bu.…

Contact seller5-star sellerHardback. Condition: Fine. First thus. Arnold Bennett was an amazingly prolific writer. Not only did he produce 34 novels, he wrote short stories, successful plays and later silent movie scripts, popular self-help books, was an active journalist, and even briefly ran the British Ministry of Information during World War I. He was one of the best selling authors of the late 19th/early 20th century. His reputation declined after his death in 1935 but has been reevaluated in recent years. Yet this book, "The Old Wives' Tale," originally published in 1908, which follows the lives of two very different sisters from their youth into old age, has always been considered one of his very best works, even by his critics. This is a particularly lovely edition, and in excellent condition. The cover has a floral pattern reminiscent of William Morris. There are full-page color drawings throughout, as well as half-page black-and-white drawings at the beginning of every chapter. The text block is tight and there are no marks, creases, or tears on the pages. The only damage is slight, where what appears to have been a book plate was removed from the inside of the back cover. There is a bit of confusion within the industry about the copyright date: The Heritage Press was originally created as the Limited Editions Club by George Macy to produce fine editions of reprints of classic works. By the time this work was published, Macy had dropped the "limited editions" part of its remit and changed the imprint's name but the fineness of the books it published remained. The book itself says Macy copyrighted the book in 1940, but the Library of Congress, acknowledging that in its catalog, says the Heritage Press published it in 1947. Regardless, you can be assured of getting a distinguished copy with this book. See our photos. Austen, John (illustrator).…
