Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 40 pages. 173 x 125 mm. Libraries worldwide that own item: 11. Anti-Semitic pamphlet. Published by William Dudley Pelley, head of the Silver Shirts, a pro fascist group in the United States in the 1930s. William Dudley Pelley (March 12, 1890 - June 30, 1965) was an American extremist…and spiritualist who founded the anti-semitic Silver Legion in 1933 and ran for President in 1936 for the Christian Party. Pelley became a journalist and gained respect for his writing skills, his articles eventually appeared in national publications. Two of his short stories received O. Henry awards, "The Face in the Window" in 1920, and "The Continental Angle" in 1930. Following World War I, Pelley traveled throughout Europe and Asia as a foreign correspondent, spent time in Russia and witnessed atrocities during the Russian Civil War. He developed a deep hatred for Communism and Jews, whom he believed were planning to conquer the world. Returning to the U.S. in 1920, he worked as a Hollywood screenwriter and wrote 2 Lon Chaney films, The Light in the Dark (1922) and The Shock (1923). By 1929 he became disillusioned with the film industry, and moved to Asheville, North Carolina. In 1928, Pelley said he had a near-death experience, detailed in an article for American Magazine called "My Seven Minutes in Eternity." In later writings, he wrote that during this event, he met with God and Jesus Christ, who instructed him to undertake the spiritual transformation of America. He claimed he was able to levitate and see through walls. When the Great Depression struck he became active in politics, moved to Asheville, founded Galahad College and Galahad Press. When, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany on 1/30/1933 Pelley, an admirer of Hitler, founded the Silver Legion, an extremist and antisemitic organization whose followers, known as the Silver Shirts and Christian Patriots, wore Nazi-like silver uniforms. Biographer Scott Beekman notes that Pelley was "one of the first Americans to create an organization celebrating the work of Adolf Hitler." He founded chapters of the Silver Legion in almost every state of the union and gained many followers. He held mass rallies, lectures, and public speeches country wide promoting anti-Communism, antisemitism, racism, jingoism, isolationism and pyramidology. He opposed Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal, founded the Christian Party and ran as its candidate for president in 1936. Pelley engaged in a long dispute with the United States House of Representatives' Dies Committee, predecessor to the House Un-American Activities Committee. In 1940, federal marshals raided Pelley's Asheville headquarters, with his followers there arrested, and his property seized. Despite serious financial and material setbacks to his organization resulting from lengthy court battles, he continued to oppose FDR, accusing him of being a warmonger. The attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 led Pelley to disband the Silver Legion, but claimed that the devastation of the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor was worse than the government claimed. In 1942 he was charged with treason and sedition and found guilty of sedition, obstructing military recruiting and fomenting insurrection within the military. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and was paroled after 8 years. In his final years, Pelley dealt with charges of securities fraud that had been brought against him while he had lived in Asheville, North Carolina.

Manuscript, Initialled by Author, 6pp., 4to, two bifoliums, good condition. SEE IMAGE FOR FULL TEXT. The essay commences with a reference to Charles Darwin, "Origin" having been published a few years before; "I suppose that animal life - supplied and controlled by the spirit of God (Gen[esis] I.2) - took its upward course throug…h the Ages, developing (possibly one from another as Mr Darwin supposes) and including all the different forms that are or have been, up to the 'man' of the Drift.[See Note below re. Pleistocene]. I suppose this creature's organism to have been similar to our own and his instinct & organic action, and the degree of its development must depend on the nature of an animals organs. I do not suppose that this man was more than an animal - that he had reason or speech- Birds build their nests by instinct; [For rest of text see images]" Note: A. The talk or lecture is in a flimsy folder on which is an apparent ascription to an "H.Harris" BUT see photograph of the concluding initials (not interpreted by me); B. "The image [of one page of six] is a handwritten letter or manuscript page from June 1865, containing a discussion of mythological and historical theories regarding ancient peoples and their origins. The author speculates on topics such as the origins of amber trade routes, the identity of the Finns and other northern tribes as descendants of Tubal Cain, and the potential characteristics of the descendants of Cain. The text concludes by acknowledging that these are merely theories, subject to change with better information or understanding of 'revelation.'" [AI]; C."The Middle and Late Pleistocene is arguably the most interesting period in human evolution. This broad period witnessed the evolution of our own lineage, as well as that of our sister taxon, the Neanderthals, and related Denisovans. It is exceptionally rich in both fossil and archaeological remains, and uniquely benefits from insights gained through molecular approaches, such as paleogenetics and paleoproteomics, that are currently not widely applicable in earlier contexts. This wealth of information paints a highly complex picture, often described as 'the Muddle in the Middle,' defying the common adage that 'more evidence is needed' to resolve it."
