Paperback. Condition: New. Second Edition. The 1859 publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species evoked a spectrum of responses, from fervent endorsement to vehement opposition, because of the theory of natural selection's implications for Western theological and cultural orthodoxy. During the 1860 Oxford gathering of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, Thomas Huxley and Samuel Wilberforce engaged in a riveting and widely publicized debate, dissecting the merits and drawbacks of Darwin's theory. Their clash ignited a multifaceted discourse that reverberated through the intellectual circles of Victorian Britain, culminating in the Royal Society's deliberations over whether to bestow upon Darwin the esteemed Copley Medal, its highest honor. In this second edition of Charles Darwin, the Copley Medal, and the Rise of Naturalism, 1861-1864, students engage in debates within the Royal Society that navigate the tension between natural and teleological views. The student roles delve into topics like inductive reasoning, science in industrial society, social reform, and women's rights, all centered around the Copley deliberations and the societal impact of Darwin's evolutionary theory.

This book presents a computer program and its accompanying functions and subroutines for predicting the reduction of pink bollworm populations in cotton by chemically terminating late-season bolls in cotton. The pink bollworm larvae feed in immature cotton bolls, and the larvae that develop in late-season bolls do not pupate or mature but instead enter the diapause or overwintering stage. Chemical termination treats eliminate the late-season green bolls that typically do not mature by harvest time and where the majority of the diapausing larvae develop. The program can be used to predict the diapausing pink bollworm population, the reduction in cotton yield, and the optimum time to apply chemical treatments. Practical implementation of such treatments can reduce pink bollworm populations, potentially reducing the need for reliance on insecticides, which themselves can harm beneficial insects and affect natural enemies of pests. An examination of field data, boll set patterns, maturation time, and the effect of chemical termination treatments provides a detailed exploration of seasonal cotton growth patterns and diapausing behavior of the bollworm, culminating in a tool to help farmers plan their bollworm management practices. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
