This book describes and analyzes various institutions for destitute children and other similar organizations in Great Britain, France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Prussia, Saxony, Bavaria, and Weimar. Included in this broad survey are specific case studies of schools, orphanages, and charitable foundations, such as the Liverpool Blue-Coat School, Heriot's Hospital, George Watson's Hospital, the Madras College at St. Andrews, institutions in Hamburg and Altona, military orphanages in Prussia and Potsdam, the Orphan-house of Frankfort on Maine, and many others. Educational reformer A. D. Bache traveled throughout Europe between 1836 and 1838, observing schools and institutions and collecting data in order to design the Girard College for Orphans in Philadelphia. His extended tour of examination was initiated at the direction of the college's trustees, upon whose instructions he sought information on the best and most useful means of educating orphans. Published in 1839, this book presents Bache's findings and comprehensive report, a trove of knowledge that encapsulates the history, organization, curriculum, and operations of a wide range of European schools and educational institutions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
