Couverture rigide. Condition: Très bon. Edition originale. in 12, de 2ff. 70pp., joli front. gravé, pl. cuir de Russie Lavallière XIXe, dos orné, encadr. d'un triple filet doré sur les plats, dentelle int., Bel exemplaire (ex-libris successifs A. Kuhnholtz-Lordat, et Comte Chandon de Briailles). Edition originale de cet ouvrage novateur. Bien qu'il s'agisse aussi de natation, l'intérêt de ce livre réside en l'invention par l'auteur d'un gilet de sauvetage en liège pour les soldats et les marins. Bachstrom né en Pologne en 1688 et mort en Biélorussie en 1742, fut à la fois théologien luthérien, professeur de lycée et imprimeur. En 1729 il est à Constantinople comme imprimeur entreprenant de traduire le Bible en turc. Puis il se réfugie à Leyde et publie un traité novateur sur le scorbut en 1734 dans lequel il écrit:« le scorbut est uniquement dû à une abstinence totale de nourriture végétale fraîche et de légumes verts ; qui est la seule cause principale de la maladie. » . Son invention d'un gilet de sauvetage en liège passa inaperçue, pourtant Sylvain Coindet dans Le sauvetage en mer à la pointe de la Bretagne au XVIIIe siècle (Univ. de Bretagne, 2019) déclare :"(Il est) . constaté pour l?Ancien Régime, une absence de titres traitant du sauvetage à deux exceptions près. L?une d?elles, un traité scientifique présentant un gilet de sauvetage en liège datant de 1741, ne trouve semble-t-il aucune application à bord des navires ! L?auteur (Bachstrom) ne manque pourtant pas d?insister sur le double intérêt de l?invention qu?il s?attribue et que l?on retrouve dans le sous-titre de son traité : Invention à l?aide laquelle on peut toujours se sauver du Naufrage ; et en cas de besoin, faire passer les plus larges rivières à des Armées entières." Une rareté !

Erste Ausgabe; eine deutsche Ausgabe erschien ein Jahr später. - Der polnisch-litauische Mediziner Bachstrom (1686-1742), Generaldirektor der Fabriken der Herzogin von Radziwill, war sehr an technischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Dingen interessiert. In vorliegendem Werk stellt er die von ihm entwickelte Schwimmweste vor, mit der sich Flüsse durchqueren lassen und die für militärische Aktionen eingesetzt werden kann, deren Hauptzweck aber die Rettung Schiffbrüchiger ist. Bachstrom ist der Erste, der die Verwendung von Kork zur Herstellung von Schwimmwesten beschreibt. - Das hübsche Frontispiz zeigt Seeleute, die sich mit Hilfe seiner Schwimmweste von einem sinkenden Segelschiff retten. - Oberer Rand teils etwas knapp beschnitten.
