English judge and Tory politician (1816-88; DNB). Both letters 3 pages, 16mo, and both in good condition. Interesting letters giving his views on an important matter. In the first letter he promises to give the matter of 'the Assizes in Surrey' his 'best consideration', his views on the subject being 'so different from those of many of my friends, that I am unwilling to take any active steps in relation to them, except such as it becomes my duty to take by reason of my official position.' '[A]s a Surrey man' he would be willing to retain the Assizes in the County at Newington, 'but as member for Mid Surrey, I cannot forget that such a change would not be agreeable to many of my constituents at Kingston, which, as Attorney General, and as a member of Parliament, independent of the constituency I represent, I am bound to say that, in my opinion, sending all [^ assign] prisoners for trial at the Central Criminal Court, and all civil business for trial in London & Middlesex, will be the best for all parties concerned'. In the second letter he thanks his correspondent for sending a copy of his letter to the High Sheriff, before going on to discuss the reasons why he 'could hardly expect otherwise than that my views should not be concurred in by the meeting at Guildford'. Two items.

Add to basketTitled 'Church Plate'. Eleven single-sided page [with hand written corrections] typed address on A3 paper given by Mr. A. Baggallay of Spink and Son Ltd., London at the Southend-on-Sea Arts & Crafts Exhibition. Separate sheet 'Mottoes on Arms of Companies' and another sheet from Ecclesiastical Art Exhibition at Southend dated January 1st to 6th, 1912. All contained in original brown envelope. During the offertory or immediately before it, a collection of money or other gifts for the poor or for the Church is taken up. In the Roman Catholic Mass, while these may be brought forward together with the bread and wine, they are not to be placed on the altar. A collection plate is often used near the end of some Protestant worship services, rather than at the offertory, to gather the gifts of the faithful for the support of the church and for charity.
