PEARLS FROM MANY SEAS: A GALAXY OF THOUGHT FROM FOUR HUNDRED WRITERS OF WIDE REPUTE, EMBRACING BEAUTIFUL MAXIMS FOR THE CONDUCT OF LIFE AND LUCID EXPOSITIONS OF HOLY WRIT, CLASSIFIED AND ILLUSTRATED. Compiled by Rev. J. B. McClure. Chicago: Rhodes & McClure Publishing Company, 1900. Copyright 1898. Attractive turn-of-the-century illustrated anthology in the publisher's highly decorative original cloth binding, with elaborate silver-stamped lettering and ornamental designs to spine and front board. A substantial collection of literary, religious, philosophical and inspirational writings arranged by subject and drawn from approximately four hundred writers. Contents include poetry, quotations, maxims, essays and excerpts from a wide variety of authors and historical figures. Among the material visible in this copy are Eugene Field's "Little Boy Blue," writings on children, Christ, art and other subjects, and passages attributed to St. Augustine, Coleridge, Napoleon and numerous others. Illustrated throughout with numerous plates and illustrations, including photographs and reproductions of works of art. Includes a portrait of compiler J. B. McClure with reproduced facsimile signature. A cataloged 1898 edition contains 528 pages and approximately 50 unnumbered leaves of plates; this 1900 printing retains the extensive illustrated format for which the work is notable. Rev. James Baird McClure (1832-1895) was a Presbyterian minister, editor and publisher associated with Rhodes & McClure. The volume was published posthumously and serves as an extensive compilation of literary, moral and religious thought. Condition: Good. Original decorative cloth binding with substantial but attractive silver-stamped decoration. Boards and spine show age-related rubbing, scuffing and shelf wear, with wear to extremities and corners. Silver decoration remains quite striking. Interior shows expected age toning with scattered foxing, spotting and occasional soiling. Illustrations remain present and generally clean and attractive. Previous-owner inscription to endpaper. No dust jacket. A solid, visually appealing example of this extensively illustrated late-19th/early-20th-century anthology. Please see photographs for condition and binding detail. An attractive decorative binding and illustrated anthology with appeal to collectors of Victorian and turn-of-the-century literature, religious and inspirational works, decorative publishers' bindings, illustrated books and literary quotation collections. Original 1900 Rhodes & McClure publication, extensively illustrated and bound in the publisher's ornate silver-stamped cloth; not a modern print-on-demand reproduction. …
