The Enchiridion, familiarly known as Veni Mecum, was conceived as a concise guide to the diagnosis and treatment of bodily ailments, distilled from classical authorities such as Galen, Hippocrates, and Avicenna. Bayrus sought to make medical knowledge portable and practicalā"something a physician could quite literally ācarry with himā (the Latin veni mecum meaning ācome with meā). The text is organized by the parts of the body and the types of maladies affecting them, from fevers and wounds to humoral imbalances and plagues, with a distinct emphasis on empirically tested remedies and botanical preparations. This 1578 Lyon edition, printed by the renowned Guillaume RouillĆ , features his famous printerās device of the eagle and serpents with the motto In Virtute et Fortuna.
