Seller: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, U.S.A.
Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Silver gelatin photograph. Measuring 4" x 5 ½"; mounted on 6 ½" x 9" board. Conn Baker in a cape and horns holding a bicycle. Near fine with a touch of silvering at the bottom and some waviness. Columbus, Ohio-native Baker was a premiere cyclist during the Golden Age of racing between 1893 and 1898, winning numerous awards, setting world records, and beating nearly every notable competitor of the time. He turned to circus trick riding in 1903, performing in costume as "Diavolo," barreling down a 100-foot wooden ramp and around a 24-high loop (an accompanying illustrated envelop shows Baker Looping the Loop"). The previous owner sold the attraction to Baker after breaking his neck trying to master the trick. Baker had better success touring oversea with the act in South African, India, and Southeast Asia with Harmston's Grand Circus and the Frank Fillis' Circus. A wonderful image.
