Photograph
Vintage studio still photograph from the 1950 film. Based on Dorothy Baker's 1938 novel of the same name. Loosely based on the life of Bix Beiderbeck, an influential jazz cornetist who died prematurely at the age of 28. In the film, Kirk Douglas plays the Beiderbeck character, here named Rick Martin. His career is constantly on the rocks, owing in part to his insistence on improvisation despite his band leader's request he stick to the written music, and in part to his alcoholism. Notable for implying that one of the main characters was homosexual, although this was not overtly expressed in the film. Shot on location in California and New York. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Illustrated by George Baker (illustrator). First Edition. Drawings for staging, costumes; musical scores; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 174 pages; [1944] Army Special Services Division. "Blueprint Special No. 2" Oversized paperback in pictorial card stock covers, featuring cover art and drawings by George Baker, creator of the famous Sad Sack comic strip. "Hi, Yank!" A World War II era Army-sponsored musical revue, was created as part of the military's effort to boost morale among troops stationed in remote areas where USO shows could not reach. This pre-packaged production provided all necessary materials for local staging, including script, music, and production guidance. Notably, "Hi, Yank!" features lyrics by Frank Loesser, one of America's most celebrated songwriters, best known for Guys and Dolls and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. His work on wartime songs such as Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition made him a defining voice of the era. The musical score was composed by Alex North, who later became a groundbreaking film composer, earning Academy Award nominations for his work on A Streetcar Named Desire, Spartacus, and Cleopatra. The book consists of separately paginated sections detailing recruitment of production staff, illustrated instructions for staging, costume and set design, and, primarily, musical arrangements. Mild toning to cover stock; catalog number penned on the unlettered spine (significance unknown). A rare and historically significant piece of wartime entertainment history, offering a unique glimpse into the Army's use of musical theater as a morale-boosting tool during World War II. Uncommon in the market. VG.
