The novel feature of this research is that it shifts the issue of legitimization/delegitimization from a vertical power set-up (meaning command/obedience between the wielder of power and the subjects) to a horizontal frame of relationship and recognition among political leaders competing to govern a State. It is thus not delegitimization as a form of resistance or disobedience to a power on the part of those who ought to obey, but strategies of discourse and rhetoric by which legitimate politicians step beyond even heated political conflict and resort to branding the opponent as an enemy of the polity, dangerous to that community's values if he/she should come to govern it. In that "horizontal" perspective delegitimization indicates an attempt to transform a legitimate adversary into an enemy. Such a perspective, significantly, calls for a historical approach and becomes of central importance. This book explores the origins of classical Greek sculpture and examines the significance, religious and secular, accorded to statues - seen not merely as representations of gods and humans but as possessing a Divine spark. The author traces the early development of sculpture from humble beginnings as shadows cast by lanterns, to the creation of large cult statues of wood clad in precious metals. The book follows the evolution of techniques and materials, particularly the use of marble, to create iconic masterpieces that embodied the religious and civic values of the Greeks. The book also sheds light on the role of sculptors, once considered mere artisans but later revered for their contributions to religious and cultural life. The author illuminates the techniques and skills required to sculpt in various materials, and the philosophical and artistic aesthetic concepts that guided the creation of these timeless works. Through detailed analysis of specific statues and sculptures, the book reveals the profound impact of Greek sculpture on Western art and culture, highlighting its enduring legacy as a testament to the human capacity for creativity and the pursuit of beauty and perfection. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Foglio cm 41 x 58. Stampato al recto e al verso. Pieghe e piccola mancanza centrale.
