Presumed first edition. 191pp. (pages 149 onwards are advertisements) and many black and white illustrations. This book records not only the history of the Police Force of Newport, but also contains information about the Chartist Riots, and many little-known facts about the town itself. The author paints a vivid picture of the town's early struggle against poverty, disease, corruption and injustice, and its rise to the position it occupies today as one of the leading commercial towns of Wales and Monmouthshire. The book is bound in the original dark blue cloth covered boards with silver titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the top rear corner and bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with staining down the top 3" of the spine edge of the rear endpapers. There is no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is browned. There is some staining on the back of the wrapper and the top corners and spine ends are bumped.
