Surfing was where it was at! My stepfather, Ron Chang, was a veteran surfer of the longboard era and introduced me to the sport. He had surfed with Doc Ball and had a copy of Doc's limited-edition photo collection shown here, originally put out in 1946. He bequeathed it to me and it is presented here as a fascinating look into another era. [.] Please remember as you read through the book, that this was penned in 1946, in a jargon of the day and places are described that are no longer as they appear in this photo collection. Maybe there are pictures here of your father or grandfather! In any event, I hope you enjoy this look back at the roots of mainland surfriding." (Jim Feuling).

The surf legend's documentation of California wave riding, the first book of its kind. John Heath "Doc" Ball, a Los Angeles based dentist and avid surfer, would use a specialized wooden camera partially made of dental tools, dubbed the "waterbox", to capture his ambitious subjects. "Surfers are nuts about pictures of themselves, especially ones that show agility in coping with the big waves. They began clamoring for the snaps I made of them with a little stinkin' box camera." Doc was active for almost all of his life and can be seen in videos nimbly skateboarding at age 92. Scarce. 200 Years of Surf Literature B7.
