An elegant 18th-century Geneva printing of the collected medical works of Guillaume de Baillou (1538â"1616), Latinized as Gulielmus Ballonius, regarded as one of the founders of modern epidemiology and clinical observation. Baillou was among the first to describe diseases statistically and systematically, emphasizing environmental and social causes of epidemics. His Opera Omnia, divided into four tomes, compiles treatises on fevers, catarrhal and epidemic diseases, respiratory ailments, rheumatism, and gout, alongside clinical commentaries and case studies. These writings influenced later medical practice well into the Enlightenment, shaping empirical diagnostic methodology in both France and Geneva. Edited and arranged by Jacques Thevart, a Paris physician, with a preface by Theodore Tronchin, Professor of Medicine at Geneva and physician to Voltaire, the edition exemplifies 18th-century scholarly typography from the Fratres de Tournes press. Printed in crisp Roman type with engraved printerâs devices and handsome red-and-black title pages, this set reflects the Geneva pressâs reputation for clarity and precision. Condition & Binding:ÂFour octavo volumes uniformly bound in contemporary full mottled calf, backs gilt in compartments with floral and foliate tooling, red morocco spine labels titled Ballon Opera Medica and numbered Tom. Iâ"IV. Board surfaces with period mottling and light rubbing; a few abrasions and scuffs to covers, corners worn, joints with some minor cracking but all volumes sound and holding firmly. Internally clean and crisp with occasional light foxing, no significant stains or tears. Red-stained page edges, marbled endpapers. Overall- very good.
