Bound with several retaining original printed wrappers, contemporary blue linen, gilt lettering on spine (occasional toning, edgewear, some scuffing to covers), still a VG volume from the libraries of Elof Axel Carlson (1931-2025), noted geneticist, historian of science, and fierce opponent of eugenics, w/ his signature on ffep.; and Charles Atwood Kofoid (1865-1947), one of the founding members of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at La Jolla, w/ his large armorial bookplate on front pastedown, w/ No. 8 [Gallardo] signed presentation from the author; No. 13 (2nd Winiwater) inscribed presentation by the author. This remarkable Sammelband combines 13 major offprint studies in cytology, heredity, and biology issued originally in scientific journals in Germany, the U.S., and France through the Progressive Era. One of the most important papers in this Sammelband is the foundational paper by Wilson on Sex Chromosomes confirming that specific X & Y chromosomes dictate biological sex, and serve as physical carriers of hereditary traits, laying the foundational framework for Thomas Hunt Morgan. Another significant paper is that of Dr. von Winiwarter whose 1912 paper here came closest of any of the early genetics and cytology researchers to identifying the correct human chromosome number with an estimate of 47. Meves (1868-1923) was an important German anatomist, and assistant to Walther Flemming, who studied sperm cytology in various living organisms, and examined the finest structural details of human spermatids and spermatozoa, with his drawings later adapted by such artists as Gustav Klimt of the Viennese Modernist movement. Mark & Copeland were well known for their studies of genetics and cytology in spermatogenesis of honey-bees, but this paper focuses on the yellow jacket; two of the offprints included in this collection include works related to Baltzer's (1884-1974) pioneering work on cell nucleus behavior, chromosomes, and merogony; while another two of the papers present Gallardo's (1867-1934) discoveries in heredity and cell division, with one inscribed.
