El método, que Banau llevaba cuatro años presentando a sociedades médicas y autoridades políticas, se reducía a que el enfermo esté al exterior, en un lugar lo más aireado posible, a dieta de una decocción de vinos aromatizados con quinquina -o 'corteza de los jesuitas', o 'corteza peruana': la corteza machacada de la Cinchona, un árbol de Sudamérica-. Banau insistió una y otra vez en que en el método era imprescindible la aireación, salir de la atmósfera ponzoñosa en la que la fiebre pútrida se contagiaba. Se trataba, pues, de una combinación de higienismo hipocratista y tratamiento alcaloide ya que, si bien la quinquina ya estaba reconocida como una gran antiséptico, lo que se ignoraba era que el efecto del tratamiento se debía a que la quinquina contenía quinina (que no fue aislada hasta 1820). A título de curiosidad incluye una receta para preparar choucrut, alimento que propone, tomándolo del capitán Cook, como medio para evitar la fiebre pútrida (escorbuto) de los marineros.La segunda de las obras encuadernadas es la primera edición de la primera obra (no recensionada por Garrison ni por Pauly) publicada (si exceptuamos la obligada de la tesis doctoral) por el prolífico médico y profesor universitario Johann Hermann Fürstenau, el creador del género de literatura científica de las desideratas y el gran promotor de la disciplina académica de la Oeconomía. Fürstenau concebía las 'desideratas' como una exposición de los resultados del examen de las obras y teorías de otros autores destinada tanto a detectar sus lagunas como a señalar los puntos en los que se requerían nuevas investigaciones porque su desarrollo podía aportar soluciones a otros problemas diferentes. En este caso, su examen, que le costó mucho publicar por su empeño de hacerlo en Holanda, se compone de dos desideratas, una dedicada a la patología y otra a la semiótica. Cuando en 1727 reunió todas las que escribió en un solo volumen, incluyó estas en segundo y tercer lugar (precedidas solo por su tesis doctoral) bajo los títulos de Desiderata pathologica y Desiderata semeiotica. El espíritu de las desideratas de Fürstenau enlazaba de lleno con el de una disciplina que él mismo concibió denominándola Oeconomia: el conocimiento interdisciplinar -fundamentalmente científico- de lo necesario para resolve.
