Hardcover. Condition: Good. A new edition. With notes and historical explanations by Antoine Banier. Bound in contemporary speckled calf, with gilt titles and decorations tao the spine, the edges stained red. Some smoke damage to the gilt volumes and the tails of the spines, rubbing and losses to the heads of the spines. The extremities are rather bumped and tired, with some losses to the leather at the edges similarly. The joints are rubbed. There are occasional stains and scratches to the boards, particularly the first volume. The hinges are just a touch tender, the binding otherwise firm. No ownership inscriptions. Occasional spots, but leaves are generally very bright. Each volume is richly illustrated with headpieces and tailpieces, Volume I illustrated with five engraved plates including a frontispiece, volume II with six, volume III with five. Final volume bound with table and an approbation. A lovely mid 18th century French set of Ovid's Metamorphoses, in contemporary leather bindings.

À Paris, par la Compagnie des Librairies, 1788, nouvelle édition, vieillereliure demi-cuir, environ 18.5 X 11 cm, (lxxxiv, vie d'Ovide) (48) 287 pages, illustré de 5 gravures en hors-texte, une en frontispice de l'ouvrage et une autre en frontispice des quatre livres de fables inclus dans ce volume. La reliure est en très bon état ; propre, complète et solide, montrant un minimum d'usure au cuir mais un léger pâlissement du dos. Le papier marbré des plats montre des frottements de surface et de l'usure aux bordures. L'intérieur est en bon état montrant à l'occasion une petite déchirure à la marge de quelques rares pages, quelques roussures éparses, quelques cachets de bibliothèque sur la première garde, et un résidu de pochette de papier au dernier contre-plat. Enfin nous devons signaler qu'étrangement quelques pages sont particulièrement brunies alors que leur voisine est de teinte normale, il en est ainsi d'ailleurs de la page de titre comme vous pourrez le constater sur la photographie. Les 5 gravures sont en très bon état sans roussure. Signé par l'auteur.
