Book Condition: Near Fine; light bumping to head, tail, and tips. DJ: Near Fine; NOT Price Clipped (£20); light bumping to head, tail, and tips. Red cloth boards and spine with bright silver lettering on the spine. 216 pp 8vo. Rod and his brother Jerry both became Spitfire pilots during World War II, leaving their home in Canada only to find themselves - purely by chance - serving together in the defense of Malta during 1942. Jerry had already gained some fame as the first pilot ever to land a Spitfire on an aircraft carrier (due to a faulty fuel feed after being launched to fly to the beleaguered island). Both showed immediate promise as fighter pilots, but by the end of that year Jerry was dead - last seen chasing a German bomber out to sea - while Rod had become an 'ace' and would receive the D.F.C. (Distinguished Flying Cross). Two years later, serving as a squadron commander in Western Europe, he claimed six Messerschmitts down within a single week, and was involved in the shooting down of the first German jet aircraft to fall to British Commonwealth fighters. He ended the war as one of Canada's highest scoring aces, with more than 13 victories to his credit. Qualifying after the war both as an aeronautical engineer and as a barrister, he brought a keen and analytical intellect to a passionate interest in aviation and aerial combat, writing many letters and articles of great depth and insight. A clean very presentable copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First published in 1981, this is a fifth impression of 1982, a tribute to the subject's popularity. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners slightly bruised, some slight spotting to page fore edges, price clipped, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg copy for its age. 303pp, illustrated. A biography of Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader, CBE, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar, DL, FRAeS (1910-82). He was a Royal Air Force flying ace during the Second World War and was credited with 22 aerial victories, four shared victories, six probables, one shared probable and 11 enemy aircraft damaged. Bader joined the RAF in 1928, and was commissioned in 1930. In December 1931, while attempting some aerobatics, he crashed and lost both his legs. Having been on the brink of death, he recovered, retook flight training, passed his check flights and then requested reactivation as a pilot. Although there were no regulations applicable to his situation, he was retired against his will on medical grounds. After the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, however, Douglas Bader returned to the RAF and was accepted as a pilot. He scored his first victories over Dunkirk during the Battle of France in 1940. He then took part in the Battle of Britain and became a friend and supporter of Air Vice Marshal Trafford Leigh-Mallory and his 'Big Wing' experiments. In August 1941, Bader baled out over German-occupied France and was captured. Despite his disability, Bader made a number of escape attempts and was eventually sent to the prisoner of war camp at Colditz Castle. He remained there until April 1945 when the camp was liberated by the First United States Army. Percy Belgrave Lucas, CBE, DSO & Bar, DFC (1915-98), commonly known as Laddie Lucas, was a Royal Air Force officer, famous left handed golfer, author and Member of Parliament. Jacket painting after Cuthbert Orde (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. This copy is in new, unmarked condition bound in black cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is in new condition. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. The amazing story of one of 'the Few', fighter ace Tom Neil. This is a fighter pilot's story of eight memorable months from May to December 1940. When the Germans were blitzing their way across France, Pilot Officer Tom Neil had just received his first posting - to 249 Squadron, in process for forming at RAF Church Fenton in Yorkshire. Nineteen years old, fresh from training at Montrose on Hawker Audax biplanes he was soon to be pitch forked into the maelstrom of air fighting on which the survival of Britain was to depend. By the end of the year he had shot down 13 enemy aircraft, seen many of his friends killed, injured or burned, and was himself a wary and accomplished fighter pilot. Tom Neil is one of only a handful of veterans still alive today. The average age of surviving veterans is 91. Only 20 veterans out of 2947 official Battle of Britain pilots are fit enough to attend Battle of Britain Fighter Association events (although around 90 are still alive in total). He is 89 and lives in Suffolk with his wife who was a Fighter Command plotter when they met in 1940. He flew 141 combat missions (few pilots reached 50) mostly from North Weald airfield in Essex, and shot down 13 enemy aircraft during the Battle of Britain. Tom Neil was one of the pilots the War Ministry used in their propaganda at the time of the Battle of Britain partly because of his height (6 ft 4) and his good looks. Tom Neil flew with James Nicolson at the time he won the only Battle of Britain Victoria Cross. Illustrated with photographs from the author's own collection, some published here for the first time. Ref QQQ 4.

International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Thomas Francis "Ginger" Neil, DFC & Bar, AFC, AE (14 July 1920 - 11 July 2018) was a British aviator, fighter pilot and flying ace in the Royal Air Force. Neil flew during the Battle of Britain, and shot down 14 enemy aircraft during the Second World War. Neil was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on 8 October 1940 and was awarded a Bar to the award on 26 November 1940. He embarked with No. 249 Squadron on HMS Furious on 10 May 1941 and sailed for Gibraltar, and on arrival the squadron transferred to Ark Royal. The squadron flew to Ta' Qali on 21 May to take part in the Battle of Malta and he shot down a Macchi C.200 fighter on 12 June 1941. Spitfire-From the Cockpit is lavishly illustrated with many never before seen photographs and combat tales, this book will be a delight from start to finish and also a record of when Britain built the best fighters in the World.
